The US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the season, has brought the the biggest tennis players in the world together to battle for the illustrious title, as well as add further ATP points to climb up the individual rankings. Oh, and there’s some decent prize money in store for them too.

How many points are distributed for the ATP and WTA ranking at the US Open?

The US Open distributes the same number of points in the men’s and women’s categories and, being a Grand Slam tournament, it also awards the same amount as the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon. This is the distribution of US Open points based on the round that each player reaches. Five men were in a position to become world number one after this tournament.

  • First round: 10 points
  • Second round: 45 points
  • Third round: 90 points
  • Round of 16: 180 points
  • Quarterfinalist: 360 points
  • Semi-finalist: 720 points
  • Finalist: 1,200 points
  • Champion: 2,000 points

How much prize money is awarded at the US Open?

There’s a big financial incentive for those joining the tournament this year. The US Open will distribute $60 million in prizes to the players, the biggest purse in the history of the competition. This is up from a total of $57.5 million last year. The singles champions will win $2.6 million each, while those who win the doubles trophy will pocket $688,000.

This year’s giant purse will benefit those who exit in the earlier rounds. For example, if a player is defeated in the first round, he or she will still take home $80,000. This is an 85% increase for those who are eliminated from the tournament in the opening round from 2016 figures. Those who are beaten in the second round will receive $121,000, 57% higher than the amount awarded six years ago.
