We are heading to the weekend from Los Angeles Country Club, and it’s still Ricky Fowler on top of the leaderboard in the 123rd US Open. The Southern California native had another record day, shooting a two under 68 to match the lowest two round total in tournament history.
Fowler first after Friday
The USGA made sure that there would be no more record setting rounds on Friday after Fowler and Xander Schauffele broke the US Open record with their opening day 62s. The pins were tucked into some tricky positions and the greens firmed up on Friday which gave some players some trouble heading into the weekend.
Fowler seemed not to mind the new pin placements or the quicker greens. He started his round with three straight birdies after a 10 birdie day on Thursday. The Californian had three birdies to start the day and has 18 birdies in 36 holes, and will go into Saturday as the leader after two days in LA.
Xander Schauffele went birdie-birdie on his last two holes to recover from three straight late round bogeys to finish what has been a steady first two days. He is at -8 with Rory McIlroy who shot three under on the day after six birdies on the front nine. Wyndham Clark sits a shot above McIlroy and Shauffele at -9 after stepping up and silencing the doubters who said the stage was too big for him.
DJ bounces back from quad on No. 2
There were birdies to be had on Friday, but the North Course in LA was full of traps, and if players weren’t careful they could find themselves in a load of danger in the swing of a club. Dustin Johnson found that out the hard way when he posted a quadruple bogey on the second hole of his day. He would bounce back and finish even par on the day heading into he weekend at -6.
Harris English is in fifth all alone after a four under 64, which was only bettered by Min Woo Lee who shot five strokes under par to finish Friday at -6 with Dustin Johnson.
The cut line finished at +2 which left some big names on the outside looking in including Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth. The chase is on as the rest of the pack look to keep pace with Ricky Fowler who is in store for an exhilarating final 36 holes. The big question entering Saturday is, How will the USGA set up the course on moving day?
Schauffele goes birdie-birdie to finish
Schauffele follows in McIlroy's footsteps with a birdie on 17, and then finishes his round with a second straight birdie to get back to even on the round and -8 heading into the weekend. He will be more than happy with how he ended his round after a moment of turbulence at 15 and 16. He is just two back of McIlroy who leads at -10.
Ricky Fowler is our 36 hole leader and just tied the record for the lowest score through two days of the US Open.
Look at this beautiful approach shot from Fowler on 17. That set up his 18th birdie in the first two rounds from LACC. He is the leader heading into the weekend at -18 after rounds of 62 and 68.
Scheffler's final Friday push
Scheffler has jumped into the mix with birdies on two of his last three holes. He is three under on his back nine and -5 on the week heading into his final hole of the day.
Schauffele stops the spell
Morikawa just birdied another hole and he is even going into the final hole!
Meanwhile Schauffele just parred 16 after missing the ridge that would have put him in position to go for a birdie from short range. He rolled his putt perfectly but just left it under the cup and will settle for par to break his streak of three straight bogeys. He's -6 for the tournament and still have some time to move up the board.
Colin Morikawa came roaring back with two straight birdies on 15 and 16 to put him in good shape to make the cut in the final two holes. Right now the projected cut, so he he's not out of the woods just yet.
Fowler leads going into 18
Fowler drills his 18th birdie of the weekend after smacking his drive down the fairway. He approach left him just 7 feet for birdie and he sinks the putt for just the 6th birdie on 17 all day!
Three in a row for Schauffele
Schauffele just over shot the flag on 15 and had an impossible putt to try to get it remotely close for par. After putting around the ridge, brushing up with the fringe he was hoping it would fall back to the hole but left a 10 footer for par which crept by the hole just an inch away from saving par. Thats three straight birdies for Schauffele who walks off the green with a cheeky smile, perhaps thinking he read his second putt right.
Fowler had this howitzer of an iron shot that snuggled close to the cup for his 17th birdie of the week, but then dropped a shot on the Par 5 16.
Schauffele drops a shot
Schauffele with a second straight bogey to drop to -7 after 14 holes. He didn't bogey once in the first round, but today he has three and is one over on the round.
Ricky back on top
Fowler takes the lead back with his 17th birdie in 33 holes! He has been absolutely stunning through the first two days at LACC!
He is -10 with three holes to go. Clark is the only one at -9 after a bogey from Schauffele at 13.
Rare par for Fowler on 13
Fowler just left his birdie putt three inches short on 13, and that is just his ninth par all over the last two days. He's got 16 birdies and 7 bogeys in what has been a fascinating couple rounds of golf for the SoCal native looking for his first major championship.
Contenders looking to make a move
Scheffler, Kim and Hovland are all -3 with more than a handful of holes to go, so we will monitor their progress as we head to the final stretch before the cut.
The cut is currently at +3 which would leave Mickelson, Speith, Homa out of the weekend.
It's all square!
Fowler just dropped a shot on 13 and we now have a three way tie at the top of the leaderboard! It's Fowler, Schauffele and Clark at -9!
Clark is the only one in the house, while the other two have a long way to go before thinking about the weekend. Buckle up! This is going to be an entertaining final couple hours from LA.
Now that we are all caught up, take a look at the leaderboard with the top two Fowler and Schauffele still in the midst of their second round. Will they stay on top or will there be any changes heading into Saturday in LA?
Fowler birdied the Par 4 13 to snap a streak of two straight bogies and he is now leading the US Open at -10.
There we have it we are officially caught up with all of the highlights and now we can focus on the leader board live. Don't go anywhere. Schauffele and Fowler will be locking horns in the back nine and it looks like one of those two are going to be leading the tournament going into Saturday if nothing drastic happens in the next few hours.
Fowler followed up a record breaking round on Thursday with three straight birdies to start his day. He had two bogeys and two birdies to finish off his front nine, but the back nine isn't going to play just yet. He went bogey-bogey on 10 and 11 and is -10 just a shot ahead of Schauffele and Clark.
Rory finished his round with birdies on four of his last five holes, and almost capped it off with an ace at No. 9! He has scorched this front nine in LA over the last two days, going -10 with just one bogey on holes 1-9.
Don't sleep on Jon Rahm, who started his round with this putt from off the green for eagle! He is one under heading into the ninth hole and -2 on the tournament.
Cameron Smith made moves before the weekend, going three under and finishing the day at -4 heading into Saturday. He is seeking his first major on this side of the pond after winning The Open last year.
Wyndham Clarke finished his round before Fowler and Schauffele started their second round, and went into the club house in the lead at -9 after a three under 67 on Friday.
It wasn't as smooth as it was on Day 1, but Rory has been insatiable on the front nine of LACC. He had a bogey on 4, but then finished his round with four birdies in the last five holes.
Rory had a rough first nine, but got to his back nine, which is actually holes 1-9 and started a tear. He birdied two of the first three to get back to even heading into the final six holes. The third hole would set him up for another fantastic finish to his second round.
Schauffele keeping pace
Xander Schauffele is back in red numbers after a birdie on the eighth after a bogey on seven. He took advantage of the Par 5 with a great drive and approach, and two putted to get back to a stroke of Fowler after Ricky left his par putt short on No. 10.
The reigning champion of the US Open may not be in contention this weekend, but this hole in one should give him something to remember a year after taking home the hardward. He is +1 and is likely to be playing this weekend with the cut at +3
Our leader is heading to the back nine
Ricky Folwer just left his birdie put about an inch short on No. 9. That would have been his sixth of the front nine, but instead he is -3 after five birdies, two bogeys and a par to start his day.
Wyndham Clark made sure everyone knew his name after round one, and wasted no time taking the lead at -9. He would stay even after that and goes into the weekend with a great chance to get his first major at LACC.
Rory had a steady first round, with just one bogey which came on the final hole of Day 1. Round two had a few more ups and downs. He birdied his second hole, but went +2 on his first nine before six birdies on his second nine for a three under 65.
Rory birdies another!
The roller coaster ride continues for Ricky Folwer! He just birdied No. 8 for his fifth birdie on the front nine. He had 10 bridies yesterday and five today to head to the ninth at -11, leading the pack by two strokes.
Schauffele in the red today
Xander Schauffele just pulled level with Wyndham Clark at -9 after his first birdie of the day on the Par 4 6th.
The leaderboard is looking very similar to yesterdays where Fowler and Schauffele were setting the pace from the get to.
Fowler drops a shot, leads by 2
Our leader, Fowler just had a bogey on the near 300 yard Par 3 on 7. He has had just one par, four birdies and two bogeys going into the eighth hole. He has been must watch TV for the first day and a half and we won't take our eyes off him for the rest of the tournament.
He is at -10 and two under for the day after an wild start to his second round.
After a near bogey free round yesterday, DJ had a disastrous start to his second round with a quadruple bogey on the second. He would bounce back and end his round even par after a fantastic comeback over the final 16 holes. He's -6 going into the weekend and eyeing another US Open title.
Phil had an up and down first round, and finished his second round four over. He is currently below the cut line at +3.
We hate to have a go at the players who have felt the rath of this course, but after yesterday we have to show that despite the record setting scores, this is still a very tough course that can fool even the best of the best.
Early on there were chances to go low as Andrew Putman showed on No. 2. He bridied the Par 4, but finished -1, one over on the day.
Leave the flag in for Brent Grant who bounced back from an early bogey with this longgggg birdie putt to get back to +2 through three holes. Things would go downhill from there, shooting +4 for the day and is in serious danger of missing the cut.
First things first
Before we get into the highlights of the early rounds, lets take a look at the course lay out which has been considerably harder than yesterday.

Round 2 conditions
The sun may be out, but don't think that it means that players are going as low as they did yesterday. The USGA responded after a record setting day from LACC yesterday, and this course is not nearly as kind as it was on Day 1.
Ricky Fowler and Xander Schauffele are in play and looking to climb up the leader board in the afternoon after Wyndham Clark and Rory McIlroy posted steady rounds to head into the weekend on the first page of the leaderboard.
