We are all set for Sunday from LA after a tough third round in Southern California. Ricky Fowler and Wyndham Clark will be in the final pairing going into the final day with a share of the lead at -10.
LACC got tougher as day went on
Early on it looked like it was going to be another day where the players could go low after Tom Kim came out and posted a 29 to break the record for low score after nine holes in a US Open. He would cool down on the back nine shooting four under on the day and -3 heading into Sunday.
His 66 was the low round on Saturday as the course would only get tougher as the leaders teed off later in the day. Fowler was the last to tee off, and none of those on the front page of the leaderboard could take advantage of a front nine that has been considerably easier than the final nine holes.
After a wild first two days in which he had 18 birdies, nine bogeys and nine pars, he had a relatively calm third round. He started with a birdie on the Par 5 first, but would go even through the front nine, which he was eight under on through the first two days. The SoCal native went one under on the day and had the lead going into 18, but a three putt bogey soured what was a steady round.
Clark is ready for the big stage
Fowler was paired with Wyndham Clark who showed he is ready to stick around until the end. He birdied two of the first three holes to draw level with the leader, Fowler, but the golfer out of Denver showed his calm nerves and poise after back to back bogeys when it looked like the wheels were about to fall off. He had an icy birdie on 14 following his bogeys and would birdie 18 to match Fowler at -10 and set up a Sunday to remember.
Rory McIlroy came out much like Clark, birding two of his first three and had a mature round, with not too many peaks or valleys. He would end the day one under and will be matched up with Scottie Scheffler who had a ferocious finish to his Saturday. The world No. 1 had a quiet day behind the pack that was chasing Fowler all day but a hole-out eagle on 17 and a birdie on 18 propelled him up the leaderboard as he finished the day at -7 after a two-under 68.
All set for Sunday
Xander Schauffele had a day to forget off the tee. After just one bogey through his first 30 holes, he had three in his first five holes and ended with six on the day as he shot a three over, 73.
He ended the day at -5 and is in a group including Harris English (-6), Dustin Johnson (-5), Ryutaro Nagano (-5) that will have to make some major moves if they are going to have a chance at winning tomorrow.
Wyndham Clark knew he stuck this as soon as he hit it. He showed guts and perseverance after a few slip ups on the back nine and is going into Sunday in the final group.
Ricky Fowler is looking for his first major championship, and unlucky breaks like this aren't going to help his cause. He has been at the top of the leaderboard all week, but this was a tough way to end his round.
Clark, Fowler all square going into Sunday
Clark yelled "be right" as soon as his fairway shot left his club. He knew he hit a dart, and it hit the flag stick to give him an 8 footer which he drilled to close out the day with a birdie. He is -10 and will go into Sunday with a share of the lead after Fowler three putts on the final hole.
He had a long put that just lipped out, and his five footer blew right past the hole to drop him -10. He played a great round but that will leave a sour taste in his mouth overnight.
Still everything to be decided on Sunday!
We are headed to the final hole!
Clark's approach on 17 left him well wide of the green and up against a rock so he had to take an unplayable which lead to a bogey.
Fowler with another breezy par after a perfect drive and a second shot that his the comfort zone of the green. His long birdie putt was lagged to within a few inches and he taps in for par.
Folwer is heading into the final hole at -11, and Clark is tied for second at -9.
McIlroy ends day under par
McIlroy taps in for birdie after another perfect drive and an approach that brushed the right side of the green. He put his 40 foot put within inches and will finish his round one under and is likely to be paired with Rick Fowler tomorrow.
Schauffele finishes a rough day in which he couldn't get anything right with his driver and ends the day with a par for a three over 73.
Rory finishes -9 and Schauffele will go into Sunday at -5.
Rough ending for English
English just whiffed his chip in the thick rough from just off the 18th green, but recovered with a great second attempt. He is heading to the house at -6, but that dropped shot hurt on a back nine with four bogeys.
Schauffele sliding
Rory missed out on a birdie putt on 17 from over 40 feet as it comes just inches from the cup. Schauffele went in the bunker and left himself a lot of work to do for par, and couldn't make the 19 footer. McIlroy stays at -9 and Schauffele drops to -5 heading into the last hole.
Clarke inches from a share of the lead
Clark left his birdie putt just under the hole, and he was that close to drawing level with Fowler who missed his birdie put on 16. Two more holes to go for the first and second placed players late in round three.
English at -7 heading into 18
English finishes his day even par on the day. He was -10 at the turn but bogeys on 11, 12 and 14 drop him back to -7 going into the final hole.
Rory's birdie had him within a shot of the lead on the Par 5 14. He trails Fowler by 2 at -9.
Scottie Scheffler with the shot of the day and finishes his round three under on his last two holes to finish the day -2 and -7 on the week.
What a way to end the day!
Scheffler with a long birdie put on 18 and he goes eagle-birdie to end his round at -7 and he is going to gunning for the title tomorrow after a fantastic finsh!
Lip out for Forwler!
Fowler just blew a golden opportunity to birdie the Par 5 14, but his 7 footer lipped out and he left himself some meat on the bones for par. He is heading to the Par 3 at -11 but that miss hurts.
Pars on shortest hole for Rory and Xander
Schauffele was flirting with a birdie on the short Par 3, leaving his long downhill, winding putt an inch short of the cup He breaks his bogey streak with a par on 15. McIlroy had a better chance for birdie but his right to left putt never fell and he will settle for birdie as well.
Fowler is pin seeking! His approach from the fairway on 14 sets up another great looking birdie putt!
Ricky is locked in on the greens, and on 13 he comes up with the putt of the day from 69 feet to stay in the lead at -11
McIlroy back to -10
McIlroy sinks a short birdie put to get back to double digits under par on the Par 5 14! Schuffele drops another shot for his second straight bogey and now they will head to the shortest hole on the course.
SHOT OF THE DAY!
Scheffler with an EAGLE from the fairway on 17!!! That's a huge shot to put him in a position where he can really think about making a run for the title on Sunday.
RICKY ROAR ON 13!!!
Just when everyone was dropping shots on 13, Folwer drills a monster 69 foot putt from the fringe for birdie!!! Perfect roll, perfect lead and if he ends up winning this tournament we will look back to that putt right there! Highlight to come as he moves to -11 just a shot above Clark who birdied after a fantastic approach shot! What a bounce back from Clark who had two straight bogeys and a near whiff on his chip last hole
McIlroy -8 after a bogey on 13
McIlroy and Schauffele both bogey 13 and you can see this course starting to bite back on the final nine. Schauffele's driver has been his weak link today, but he is still hanging around at -7.
The rough has been a story all week long, but Clark had a great lie and just chunked it. His second straight bogey drops him a shot behind Fowler.
Fowler in the lead after Clark's second straight bogey
Clark pulled his drive way left and got lucky enough to get a good lie from 80 yards out. His chip hit the short rough at the back of the green and fluffed it about a yard. His next chip was put tight, but that's a second straight bogey after a previously bogey free round.
Fowler pars the 12th and he has five straight pars, which is awfully unusual for Ricky this week.
Bogey spell snapped for English
English settles down, and pars the 13th after back to back bogeys. Important hole for English to stop the bleeding and calm down a bit heading into the final five holes at -8.
Two way tie at -10
Clark had a bogey free round up until the Par 3 11th that he put into the bunker at the front of the green. His chip left a lot of work to be done, and the 10 footer rolls past the cup as he bogeys for the first time today. He and Fowler are both at -10 going into the 12th.
Pars for Fowler and Schauffele on 12
Fowler came up just inches away from birdie on the Par 3412th. It would have been only the second birdie of the day on that hole, but he remains at -9.
Schauffele found the green as well but had a tough uphill putt that he left well short of the cup. He will stay at -8 and heads to the 13 knowing the leaderboard just got a little tighter.
Nerves starting to get to English?
English with back to back bogeys and he needs to steady the ship before the wheels fall off. He's -8 after 12 holes.
SO here is the leaderboard as the leaders of the US Open head into the meat and potatoes of the back nine. How will this scoreboard change over the next couple hours?
Fowler survives a scare
Fowler had a scary chip from the deep stuff on the short side of the 10th green and played a beautifully delicate shot for a tap in par to stay at -10. Clark just missed a long birdie putt from just over 20 feet, and just left it high of the hole. He taps in for par to stay in the lead at -11
English bogeys 11
English just dropped a shot with a short par putt and this is when the pressure of the US Open can start to get at you. He's -9 and we will see how he holds up for the rest of the round.
This is where it gets interesting
Schauffele and Rory open their first hole of the back nine with pars and this is where things are going to get interesting. The front nine treated players kindly earlier in the day, but the final nine has given everyone fits.
Last group heading into back nine
Clark and Ricky both hit the green off the tee on the Par 3 ninth, but both had tough birdie putts. Each end their front nine with pars and it's Clark leading the US Open after a two under on the front nine. Fowler is even on the day heading into the turn.
Xander Schauffele is showing plenty of poise after a horrific first few holes to start the third round. He ends his first nine even, and is at -8 with nine to play.
English pulls to within one
Watch out! All of this talk about Ricky, Rory and Schauffele but it's Harris English who is -10 after a birdie to start his back nine!
Five for both on Par 5 eight
Both Ricky and Clark settle for pars on the Par 5 8th, but that will be a disappointment for both of them. On they go to the Par 3 ninth.
Rory and Xander done with 9
Schauffele is back to even par after a birdie on the Par 3 ninth!! What a bounce back it has been for Xander who looked lost in the first three holes of the day. Rory finishes his first nine -1 after a par on the ninth.
Almost an eagle for Schauffele
Schauffele's eagle putt never dropped after leaving it high of the cup and that will be a birdie for Schauffele, but it will seem like a waste after one of the shots of the day on the Par 5 8th. He was about 270 away and left himself less than 10 feet for eagle.
Rory went into the baranca grass on his second shot looking for the green and he let a birdie opportunity slip.
McIlroy is -9, and Schauffele is -7 and +1 on the day after his birdie.
Take a look at this putt from Fowler! He has been the best on the greens this week and the SoCal native is back to -10
Rory held on for par after his tee shot found the rough on the Par 3 7th and he's in some trouble again on the Par 5 8th.
FOWLER DROPS IN A BIRDIE FROM OVER 20 FEET AWAY ON THE PAR 3 7TH!! Beautiful read on the right to left putt and he is back to -10!
Clark was in the rough on the left side of the green, but a great chip left him a six footer and he cooly knocks it down to remain at -11. He looks unphased in the biggest day of his young major career.
Pars on 6 for final group
On the tricky 6th, Ricky and Clark both had good looks with their second shot. Clark put it in perfect position on the right side of the fairway giving himself a great look to put his chip close. Ricky over shot the green and had a difficult bunker shot that almost got caught in the bermuda grass but trickled down for a tough birdie putt. Both end up with pars and will head to the 7th.
Clark is -11 and Rory is -9
The question coming into today for the casual golf fan was: Wyndham who? No one will be wondering who he is after watching him start this third round. He is the pace setter at -11, two under on the day.
Scauffele with a birdie on 6
Both Rory and Xander hit the bunker on the reachable Par 4 sixth, which is actually where you want to be if you can't land it on the green. Rory's chip out of the sand checked up, but Xander's ran towards the hole and he birdies, while Rory settles for Par.
Schauffele is -6 while Rory is at -9, one under for the day.
Rocky stretch for Ricky
Fowler put it in the rough on 5 and that pretty much means your playing for bogey after that. He chipped into the fairway but his approach left a 20 footer that he left short and he drops another shot on 5.
DJ in danger
Johnson bogeys his second straight hole after another drive that left him with almost no options. He is two over on the day and -4 on the tournament.
English birdies 6
English with his third birdie through six holes and he is just two off the lead heading into the 7th hole. He and Clark are playing the steadiest golf of anyone who has teed off over the last hour.
Schauffele struggling out of the gate
Rory survives the toughest hole on the course with a par on the Par 4 fifth. Schauffele wasn't as lucky. His driver let him down again and he bogeys the fifth. He's had 6 bogeys on his last 11 holes after just one in his first 30 holes.
DJ dropping shots
Johnson drove it into the rough on 5 and ended up in the bunker in front of the green after his second shot. He couldn't get up and down and drops another shot which puts him at -5 through 5 holes. His tee shot on 6 left him on a ridge from the right side of the green and will have his work cut out to save par.
Our leader keeps rolling
Clark just left a 40 footer about an inch short of the cup on 4 and he taps in for par to stay at -11 leading Fowler by a stroke.
Rory back to -9
McIlroy drops a shot after leaving his tee shot short of the Par 3 Green on 4. After his ball rolled down the hill he had a meaty putt for par, and missed it just below the cup.
He is back at -9 while Schauffele can take a breath with a simple par which hasn't come easy to him early in his round. He's -6 through 4 holes
McIlroy was tied for the lead for a moment after his second birdie through three holes, but he is a shot behind Clark after he drilled a similar putt from just a bit close to the cup moments later.
We have a new leader
Wyndham Clarke is leading the US Open after a perfect pitch on three! He hit a the speedy downhill putt and now is at the top of the leaderboard all alone with two early birdies.
Fowler stays at -10 after missing his birdie putt on three.
McIlroy with a share of the lead
Rory has looked locked in through the first three holes. Smacking it off the tee, his irons are true and he is reading the greens like no one else. He had a delicate 12 footer and put it right in the center of the cup to join Fowler and Clark at -10
Schuaffele back to -6
Schauffele's driver let him down again on three, and left him in the knee high rough on the left side of the fairway. He did have a lie, but shot the green and landed in the thick bermuda grass which left a trick chip that he blew past the hole and he ends up with his second bogey of the day.
Fowler had an incredible first two days, with bridies on 18 of his first 36 holes. He started his Saturday with another birdie, taking advantage of the Par 5 1st.
Fowler back to -10
Fowler pulled his drive on the Par 4 second, and had to lay up into the fairway after sticking himself right behind a tree in the rough. His third shot left his a tricky, very fast 30 footer which he played almost perfectly, but it comes up just short and he is back to -10 after a birdie bogey start.
English back under par for the day
English with a busy start. He just bridied the third hole and he has started birdie, bogey, birdie. He's at -8, sitting in sole possesion of 4th place.
Big par save for Schauffele
Schauffele drove it into the 17th fariway on 2, and tried to play a huge cut shot to save himself but ended up putting it in the gallery behind the hole. He chip landed on the fringe and he was facing a certain bogey for the second straight hole but he sinks the 30 footer to save par. That was a big putt to settle him down after a couple of really bad shots to start his day.
Birdies for Rory and Clark on 1
Clark went for the green with his second shot on the Par 5 first, and is rewarded with a birdie to start his round. Fowler was a little more cautious, laying up before the green but he bumped it close to the pin and sank his birdie putt to remain in the lead at -11.
Johnson -6 after up and down start
Johnson went into the thick stuff and almost under a bridge before a great safe shot to give them self a chance for par but just left the 10th floor above the cup. He goes Birdy bogey to start his day.
Last group has teed off
Fowler and Clark are underway in the third round, and both start their day with perfect drives right down the middle. Clark won his first PGA event last month, and will be looking to double down this weekend. Ricky has 18 birdies in his first 36 holes of the tournament. Will he be able to keep that pace up today?
Rory birdies, Schauffele drops a shot to start
Schauffele started his round with a bogey, but he will be happy with his putt to avoid double after getting into some trouble on the first hole. Meanwhile, Rory started his round off with a birdie after leaving his eagle putt just short. He is just one back of Fowler after his first hole.
Pairing of the day
Xander Schuaffele and Rory McIlroy make up one of the must see pairings in the third round. They are just minutes away from teeing off, starting their day at -8.
Front nine free for all
Ricky Fowler can't be too comfortable at -10. With the front nine playing like it is today, don't be surprised to see someone take the lead from him before Fowler even has a chance to tee off.
Dustin Johnson and Harris English just teed off and they both posted birdies to start their round off the right way. Johnson is now -7 while English moves to -8, just two off the lead.
The Leaderboard
There's still plenty of players yet to tee off here around three and having a look at the top of the leaderboard we see Fowler and Clarke in the last group teeing off at 3:40 ET. Scottie Scheffler just started his round and missed out on his chance for an opening hole eagle, but tapped in for birdie to get to -6. Great start for Scheffler who is surely going to make some noise on moving day.
Kim going low
The talk of the town might've been Ricky Fowler but it's been Tom Kim who stole the headlines early on with six birdies on the front nine. He came into the third round at one over and is now for under after bogies on two of his last three holes. He has three holes remaining in his third round and while he may not break the U.S. Open record like Ricky Fowler did on Thursday he has put himself right into the mix to fight for the title on Sunday.
Day 2 recap
The USGA responded after record-setting Thursday in which Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele both broke the U.S. Open record with first round 62s. The players didn't have as easy of in round two thanks to some tricky pin locations and firmer greens. While the strategy change one thing that did it was Ricky Fowler at the top of the leaderboard. He shot a 68 to head into the weekend at -10 tying another US Open record for lowest score after 36 holes. It was Fowler in Schauffele on Thursday but the rest of the pack caught up to make these final two days awfully interesting from LALA Land.
We are live from LACC
Hello everyone and welcome to Los Angeles Country Club where Ricky Fowler has basically led wire-to-wire over the first few days but Wyndham Clarke, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schuaffele are hot on his heels as we await the leaders tee off times over the course of the next hour. The story so far has been Tom Kim who has been sensational in his third round, but he’s not the only one taking advantage of this unusually scoreable US course.
US Open Round 3
Day 3 of the US Open is underway from LA Country Club and today promises plenty of fireworks. This course is once again looking very approachable, and players are taking advantage in the early tee off times. Rick Fowler and the rest of the first page of the leaderboard are yet to start their third round, but if the first half of the day is any indication we are in for some drama before going into the final round on Sunday.
