Wells Fargo Championship: Final Round tee times and pairings
Rory McIlroy narrowed the gap on the strength of a bogey-free 67, but couldn’t overcome Xander Schauffele’s lead at Quail Hollow course.
Xander Schauffele, an American golfer, played a 1-under 70 on the third day of the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club. However, Rory McIlroy, a Northern Irish professional golfer, outperformed him by three strokes to trail him by only one stroke with the final round set to be played on Sunday. Sungjae Im, a South Korean golfer, is currently in the third position at 8-under, four strokes behind Schauffele.
Despite a tough day at Quail Hollow, Schauffele managed to make two birdies against one bogey, finishing the day with 12 under, still one stroke ahead of McIlroy. The third-round scoring average was nearly two strokes over par, but McIlroy was the only player who avoided bogeys and shot a 67, which was tied for the best of the day with Sepp Straka from Austria.
McIlroy and Schauffele have created a sizeable gap with the rest of the field, with Sungjae Im being the closest to them, sitting in solo third at eight under, four strokes behind.
On Sunday, McIlroy and Schauffele will play together in the final pairing for the second straight day, teeing off at 1:45 p.m. ET. This is the third time they have played together in the final group in the final round on the PGA Tour. The previous two instances were the 2018 BMW Championship, which neither of them won, and the 2019 WGC-HSBC Champions, where McIlroy defeated Schauffele in a playoff.
