What has Canelo Álvarez won so far and what’s left for him to win?

Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez may be only 32, but he has already dedicated more than half his life to boxing. In 2013, he was anointed by the legendary Floyd Mayweather, who selected him to challenge him in a highly anticipated match in Las Vegas. Since then, Canelo has achieved numerous accomplishments in the ring, including winning multiple world titles in four weight classes.

Canelo’s success in the ring is evident, as he currently holds the lineal champion title in two weight classes and has unified titles in three others. He is the first and only boxer in history to become an undisputed super middleweight champion. Along the way, Canelo has faced off against some of the biggest names in the sport, such as Sergey Kovalev, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Julio Cesar Chavez, and Amir Khan, emerging victorious in each match.

Following his wins over brothers Liam and Callum Smith and a controversial draw with Gennady Golovkin, Canelo Álvarez secured a majority decision victory in their rematch. However, the bouts were so evenly matched that a third would inevitably occur, and he won that also.

In 2018, Canelo signed an eleven-fight deal that guaranteed him a minimum of $365 million, seemingly allowing the boxer from Jalisco to accomplish almost everything there is to do in boxing. Besides laying the GGG monster to rest and possibly avenging his loss to Dmitry Bivol, Canelo has achieved everything he set out to do.

Canelo’s compatriot, former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz, shares the same sentiment about Álvarez. Ruiz believes that Canelo can fight anyone he wants and doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone anymore, given that he has already proven himself to be a champion at the sport’s highest level.

With only two losses to world champions in his 62-fight career, Canelo is ready to take on more challenges. Despite acknowledging the difficulty of such a fight, he has expressed interest in fighting heavyweight and pound-for-pound king Oleksandr Usyk. “It’s going to be difficult, I know, but I love boxing, and I love being in that type of situation,” Canelo said.

While you can never accuse the Mexican fighter of being lazy or looking for an uncomplicated night’s work, it would be him if anyone deserved to do that. But, for the moment, at least, it would seem that Canelo still has that fire inside of him. And aren’t we lucky to see it?
