In contrast to the PGA Championship and the Open Championship, wherein the low 70 players and ties are permitted to participate in all four rounds, the USGA has a more stringent “cut rule” that only includes the low 60 and ties. The USGA abolished the “10-stroke rule” in 2011, which was previously utilized to determine the US Open cut.

Low scores have taken the spotlight at this year’s US Open. Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele made headlines in the opening round by posting record scores. In a stunning display of skill, professional golfers Matthieu Pavon and Sam Burns each achieved a hole-in-one on the 15th hole. The impressive feat was witnessed by spectators and fellow players alike, who were left in awe of the golfers’ precision and accuracy.

What are the US Open rules on the cut line?

Players who rank within the top 60 (including those who are tied) after the first two rounds of the US Open tournament will move on to compete in the third and fourth rounds.

Out of the four major tournaments, the Master’s Tournament is the only one that has a more difficult cut line. This means that only the top 50 players and any players with the same score as them can continue playing in the tournament.

The 2023 Open cut line:

After two rounds, the cutline was determined to be 2-over par. A total of 65 players finished at +2 or better and will be playing on Saturday and Sunday.

  • 2-over par
  • Inside the cut line: 65 players
  • Big names who missed the cut: Phil Mickelson (+3), Justin Thomas (+11), Jordan Spieth (+3), Jason Day (+9) and Justin Rose (+4).
