What is the cut line at the British Open 2024? Who won’t be playing this weekend?
A number of major golfers are battling to avoid missing the cut at the 2024 Open, held at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland.
Rory McIlroy is one of a number of big names who find themselves in a battle to make the cut at the 2024 British Open, after the world No. 2 endured a disastrous first round amid testing weather conditions at the Royal Troon Golf Club. Things aren’t going much better on Friday for McIlroy and he’s currently at 13-over par with little hope of making the cut.
Bidding to bounce back from his heartbreaking failure to win June’s US Open at Pinehurst, where he was pipped to the title by Bryson DeChambeau, McIlroy hit a seven-over round of 78 on Thursday. “The course was playing tough, the Northern Irishman said after his unsuccessful first day. “The conditions are very difficult in a wind that we haven’t seen so far this week.”
What is the projected cut line at the 2024 Open?
As of 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday, the cut line at the end of day two is currently at 5-over par (+5), but is likely to move before the end of play on Friday. The top 70 players and ties will play on Saturday and Sunday.

What other big names are in danger of missing the cut?
Alongside McIlroy, several other members of the world’s top 10 are in a fight to make it into the final two days at Royal Troon. They include Cameron Smith, Stewart Cink and Sahith Theegala.
World No. 9 Bryson DeChambeau also teed off today at 9:48am ET, having finished day one at five-over par. DeChambeau, who competes on the breakaway LIV Golf tour, is the reigning US Open champion, having won the major for the second time in his career a month ago. He is currently at 7-over par and is struggling against the elements to make the cut.
World No. 5 Wyndham Clark dropped all the way back to 16-over par (+16) on day two. Three-time Open champion Tiger Woods finished at 14-over par and in a tie for 146th place.
“I didn’t do a lot of things right today,” Woods said after the end of day one in Troon. “I didn’t hit my irons very close, and I didn’t give myself a whole lot of looks today. I need to shoot something in the mid-60s tomorrow to get something going on the weekend.”
Other former Open winners languishing below the projected cut line are Zach Johnson (+9) and Darren Clarke (+6), Henrik Stenson (+8), Justin Leonard (+16) and Todd Hamilton (+20).
