Yordenis Ugas’ stock as a boxer shot up by leaps and bounds after defeating boxing icon Manny Pacquiao in August last year. Before the fight, he was viewed as a massive underdog as a last-minute replacement for WBF and IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr., who had to back out of the bout after injuring his retina.

Yordenis Ugas: Saturday underdog

Ugas will be facing Spence on Saturday as a WBA super welterweight champion, and though he is once again the underdog for the clash, he just might pull another surprise upset as he did last year.

Compared to the boxing career of the undefeated Spence, Ugas’ road to the top has not always been paved with victory. The Cuban fled his country in a dangerous defection, before getting his first professional fight in 2010.

He first lost against Johnny Garcia in 2012 after 11 straight wins. Ugas won his next four fights then suffered back-to-back losses in 2014 to Emmanuel Robles and Amir Imam. It appeared at that time that his boxing career was undoubtedly headed south.

Yordenis Ugas strikes back

However, he bounced back and won his next eight bouts, until he lost to Shawn Power via split decision in 2019. The 35-year-old prevailed in his next three fights and in 2020, he won the vacant WBA welterweight title.

The following year, he had that fateful fight with Pacquiao that made him a household name among boxing fans.

Ugas’ score card currently stands at 27-4, with 12 of those wins by knockout. With his dogged ability to go the distance, he is likely to deliver on his promise that there will be fireworks during his 12-round battle with Spence on Saturday night.

Yordenis Ugas will go up against Errol Spence Jr. on Saturday, April 16 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The main card is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT, but the actual time will depend on how long the undercard bouts last.
