What LIV golfers have qualified for the 2023 US Open?
With the PGA Tour and LIV Golf seemingly friends again, attention quickly turned to LIV Golf’s players in the field for the 2023 U.S Open’s final qualifying.
What a week it’s been in the world of golf. Not only did we get a bombshell of a report about the seemingly rosy friendship that now exists between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, but we also quickly saw the return of golfers from the Saudi backed league to PGA Tour events, namely the U.S. Open or rather, the qualification for it.
Which LIV Golf players made the cut for the U.S Open?
Known traditionally as Golf’s “Longest Day,” final qualifying for the U.S. Open sees a multitude of amateur and professional golfers trekking between 10 different locations across the country, in the hope of making the cut for one of the PGA Tour’s majors. Yet, the biggest story was of course the presence of LIV Golf league players in the fields of the 36-hole marathon. Now, here’s the thing: As much as LIV Golf has offered its members lucrative contracts and a chance at something new, what it hasn’t done because it can’t, is offer them Official World Golf Ranking points.
To be clear, the easiest way for players to qualify for major championships is via the accumulation of OWGR points, so you can see the dilemma. LIV players have literally taken a nose dive in the rankings since joining the breakaway league. None the less, the LIV boys were back in business - 19 of them at that - however, in the end only four managed to make it, all of whom are from LIV Golf’s ‘Team Torque.’ In case you’re wondering, the U.S. Open is set for June 15th - 18th and will be held at the Los Angeles Country Club. So, LIV Golf and the PGA Tour are friends now?
Though details are still emerging, what we do know is that the two organizations have signed an agreement that would see them combine their commercial businesses and rights into a new, yet unnamed for-profit company. Interestingly, the agreement also includes the DP World Tour, frequently referred to as the European PGA Tour. Of course, the tastiest part of all, is the fact that both sides have agreed to bring an end to any ongoing litigation between them, seemingly concluding what was a bitter fight over the last year.
