Floyd Mayweather Jr returns to the boxing ring for the first time in over a year for a rematch against John Gotti III in Mexico City on Saturday and will be walked to the ring by NBA stars Anthony Edwards and Anthony Davis, fresh from winning gold medals with Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games. Davis’ LA Lakers teammate Jarred Vanderbilt will also be along for the ride.

The Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard and the Lakers duo will become the latest in a long line of famous faces to be in Mayweather’s corner. The 47-year-old has previously enjoyed the support of Justin Bieber, Snoop Dogg and Lil’ Wayne, among others.

Mayweather is known to be a big NBA fan but has largely managed to keep which team he follows - if any - a secret. Due to his friendship with former Phoenix Suns point guard Isaiah Thomas, the boxer was seen at several Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics games in years gone by, when Thomas was on their roster.

As a Michigan native, the Detroit Pistons may seem like a natural fit. While Mayweather has also been spotted watching the three-time NBA champions, he seems to have stopped short on going full-on superfan.

Mayweather tries to buy NBA franchise

Back in 2017, ‘Money’ stated it was “about time” for him to own an NBA team and pleaded with owners to get in touch with him if they were thinking about a sale.

At the end of 2022, he offered an update on his progress, saying he been “working on buying an NBA team outright” and had made an offer of more than $2 billion.

“It could be the Vegas franchise. It could be the Seattle franchise or I could be buying a franchise that’s already up and running,” Mayweather revealed. “So the first offer, we offered them a little over $2 billion for majority ownership”.

At the time, the only team up for sale was the Phoenix Suns, although the estimated value of the franchise was significantly higher than $2 billion. It is also anticipated that new expansion teams will cost considerably more than that figures when the time comes.

For now, team ownership hasn’t happened, but Mayweather will at least have the backing of some of the NBA’s brightest stars as he gets ready to face Gotti III again in Mexico City on Saturday.
