What were the reasons for the split between De La Hoya and Canelo?

During the face-to-face conference to announce Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez’s upcoming fight against Jaime Munguía, one of the moments that received a lot of attention was the tense situation between Canelo and his former promoter, Óscar De La Hoya. De La Hoya served as Canelo Álvarez’s representative for ten years (from 2010 to 2020) through his promoter ‘Golden Boy Promotions.’ During this time, Canelo’s career in professional boxing skyrocketed.

However, De La Hoya recently revealed no animosity between him and Canelo, ultimately resulting in their split from Golden Boy Promotions. Canelo’s trainer, Eddy Reynoso, has expressed particular anger towards De La Hoya after some statements he made.

“One day, a reporter asked me if I thought Canelo needed another coach, and I answered that maybe it was a good idea because I had seven coaches in my career, and I learned things from each coach. They all taught me something new. I told him that maybe Eddy Reynoso could have received some help,” revealed the owner of Golden Boy Promotions for the Fight Hype media.

Oscar De La Hoya pointed out that these statements generated discord between them, and they complained to him because they considered him disloyal. He also took time to unleash a poisonous dart by questioning why he cannot talk about loyalty when he constantly changes promoters and partners.

“How can someone who jumps from promoter to promoter, from contract to contract, from television station to television station talk about loyalty? Who is the disloyal one here?” De la Hoya said.
