The fourth and final major championship of golf’s season is set to tee off next week from Royal Liverpool. Aussie Cameron Smith will look to defend his title in the 151st edition of the Open Championship.

McIlory aiming for Royal Liverpool repeat

This will be the 12th time the British Open will be played at the illustrious Mercyside course. The first Open played on the historic grounds was in 1897 when amateur Harold Hilton lifted the Claret Jug and won a grand total of £30. Rory McIlroy won the last major championship played at Royal Liverpool in 2014, taking home £975,000 after going -17 for the tournament.

Now a field of 156 golfers will aim to be lifting the Claret Jug on Sunday afternoon from Northwest England. The field will feature PGA, LIV, DP World Tour members as well as amateurs among others. For a complete run down of qualification options for this year’s Open click here.

Just a few days away from the start of the tournament, it’s the former champ at Royal Liverpool that is one of the favorites in the odds makers eyes. Rory McIlroy is +900 along with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, while Jon Rahm tops the board at +750. Brooks Koepka is +1400 and Jordan Speith rounds out the top five at +1800, while last year’s champ Cameron Smith is +2000 to win the Open for a second straight year.

Prediction

Would it be too cheesy to take Rory McIlroy to win get back on the major championship saddle at a place he hold near and dear to his heart? After missing the cut in The Masters, he finished T-7 at Oak Hill in the PGA Championship and 2nd at LA Country Club just a few weeks ago at the U.S. Open. It seems almost impossible that the last time Rory won a major was at the PGA in 2014. Everything seems to line up perfectly for McIlroy to make a run at lifting the Claret Jug again on Sunday at Royal Liverpool, again.
