America’s Frances Tiafoe will meet Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the second round of the French Open men’s singles tournament, after the No. 25 seed outlasted Italy’s Mattia Bellucci in a five-set thriller.
Tiafoe had to come from behind at Roland Garros yesterday, winning the final two sets to earn a 6-3, 3-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Bellucci, who is the world No. 173. He now comes up against a player who breezed through the first round in straight sets, defeating France’s Luca Van Assche 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
What are Tiafoe and Shapovalov’s best French Open performances?
Tiafoe has never gone beyond the third round in Paris. The 26-year-old reached the stage for the first time last year, when he saw off Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic and the Russian Aslan Karatsev before losing in four sets to Germany’s Alexander Zverev.
Meanwhile, Shapovalov also registered his maiden third-round appearance at Roland Garros in 2023. After beating American Brandon Nakashima and Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in the opening two rounds, the Canadian was ousted in straight sets by Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. Although currently ranked at 123 in the world, Shapovalov began 2023 in the top 20. Injury issues then saw the 25-year-old, who reached as high as world No. 10 in September 2020, tumble down the rankings.

Tiafoe and Shapovalov’s French Open second-round match is to take place on Wednesday 29 May 2024, on Court 14. Their clash comes immediately after the women’s singles second-round match-up between Katie Volynets and Marketa Vondrousova, which is due to begin at 11am local time. In the United States, that translates to a 5am ET/2am PT start.

Shapovalov and Tiafoe have met six times before on the ATP Tour, with the latter enjoying the upper hand so far. Tiafoe won the pair’s first clash, at the 2018 Delray Beach Open, before Shapovalov posted four victories on the spin against his fellow North American: at the 2018 Western & Southern Open, the 2019 Miami Open, the 2019 Shanghai Masters and the 2021 Queen’s Club Championships. Tiafoe then came out on top in their most recent meeting, at the 2021 National Bank Open.
