Taylor Fritz put on an impressive performance to defeat eighth seed Casper Ruud in the fourth round at the 2024 US Open, but is now set for a tough challenge in the quarterfinals as he looks to go further than ever before in a Grand Slam.

The 26-year-old lost the first set against Ruud in the round of 16, but recovered to record a convincing 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 triumph that sets up a last-eight clash against No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev, who has won more matches in 2024 (56) than any other male player.

“I think when you play better, your expectations get higher,” Fritz said after his victory against the Norwegian. “What satisfies you, what makes you happy, both in terms of the rankings and results. It all goes up.”

Who does Taylor Fritz play next? When does he play?

Fritz will take on Zverev for a place in the semifinals on Tuesday, September 3, with the time of the match yet to be decided. The winner will face either Grigor Dimitrov (seeded ninth) or Fritz’ fellow American Frances Tiafoe (20th) in the last four.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is the favourite to reach the final in the other half of the draw, which also contains the United States’ Tommy Paul, who is the Italian’s fourth-round opponent, fifth seed Daniil Medvedev and 10th seed Alex de Minaur.

With Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic both having suffered shock eliminations early on, a number of players, Fritz included, will feel they have a golden opportunity to reach the final, and potentially win a Grand Slam.

What is Taylor Fritz’s record against Zverev?

Although the Californian now faces the hardest test he could have done in the next round, he does at least have plenty of cause for optimism.

After losing his first two matches against Zverev all the way back in 2016 and 2018, Fritz has won four of the last seven meetings between the pair, including in the round of 16 at Wimbledon in July.

This is the fifth time Fritz has reached the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam and the second occasion in the US Open. If he defeats Zverev, he will reach the semifinals for the first time in his career.
