The United States’ Taylor Fritz opens up his Wimbledon 2024 campaign today with a first-round clash against Australia’s Christopher O’Connell.

Seeded 13th in the men’s singles, Fritz heads into Wimbledon having last weekend become the first three-time title winner at the Rothesay International tournament. He beat another Australian, Max Purcell, in straight sets to add to the Eastbourne championships he won in 2019 and 2022.

What is Fritz’s best performance at Wimbledon?

Fritz is making his eighth appearance in the main draw at the All England Club, having posted his best Wimbledon performance so far in 2022. The California native reached the quarter-finals two years ago, before losing a five-set thriller to two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal. In 2023, Fritz was eliminated in the second round, throwing away a two-set lead as he went down to Sweden’s Mikel Ymer.

Fritz’s grand slam results so far in 2024

In the two grand slams played already this season, Fritz made it to the Australian Open quarter-finals for the first time - losing to 10-time Melbourne winner Novak Djokovic - then also registered a career-best finish at the French Open. The 26-year-old progressed to the fourth round at Roland Garros, before succumbing to Norway’s Casper Ruud.

O’Connell, who is currently ranked 79th in the world, reached the third round at Wimbledon last year, in what was his deepest run to date at the tournament. This season, the Sydney-born player has made the second round at the Australian Open, losing to American Ben Shelton, and missed the French Open after withdrawing through injury.

Who would Fritz face in the next round at Wimbledon?

The winner of Fritz and O’Connell’s clash on Court 18 will advance to a second-round meeting with Japan’s Kei Nishikori or France’s Arthur Rinderknech. Nishikori and Rinderknech play in the final match on Court 6 today.

Which other Americans are in action at Wimbledon today?

In the women’s singles, No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula is the US’s headline participant at Wimbledon today. Pegula kicks off her campaign on No. 2 Court, with a first-round match-up with compatriot Ashlyn Krueger. Later in the day, 11th seed Danielle Collins meets Denmark’s Clara Tauson on No. 3 Court.
