After eliminating the defending champion earlier this week, the US’s Tommy Paul now makes his first ever appearance in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open. The No. 14 seed in the men’s singles tournament, the 26-year-old takes on Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, who is seeded seventh.

Hubert Hurkacz vs Tommy Paul: start time, how to watch

Paul and Hurkacz’s last-eight clash takes place today, Thursday 16 May 2024, on Center Court at Rome’s Foro Italico. The match is scheduled to start at 1pm local time, which in the US is 7am ET/5am PT.

How did Paul and Hurkacz reach the quarter-finals?

Paul made it to the quarters with a straight-sets victory over No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev on Tuesday. The Florida native triumphed 6-1, 6-4 over the Russian, who last year won his maiden Italian Open title with a two-set victory over Denmarks Hole Rune in the final.

“I think it was a pretty clean match for me, other than maybe the first or second game in both sets,” Paul said after his win over Medvedev, in quotes published by the ATP. “I played some really good tennis. I played pretty aggressive, that was the game plan coming in.”

Meanwhile, Hurkacz saw off Argentina’s Sebastian Báez in three sets on Tuesday, beating the No. 17 seed 5-7, 7-6, 6-4. Earlier in the tournament, the 27-year-old ended Rafael Nada’s bid for a record-extending 11th men’s singles title at the Italian Open, defeating the 22-time grand slam champion 6-1, 6-3.

The winner of Paul and Hurkacz’s last-eight match-up will face Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas or Chile’s Nicolás Jarry in the semi-finals.

Hurkacz vs Paul: head to head

Paul and Hurkacz have crossed paths twice before on the ATP Tour, claiming one win each. The Pole was victorious in the pair’s first meeting, winning 7-5, 7-6 in the second round of the 2021 Paris Masters. Two years later, the American levelled their head-to-head series at the Indian Wells Open, securing a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory in the third round.

Which other Americans are in action at the Italian Open today?

Coco Gauff is due on Center Court immediately after Paul, as the US Open champion takes on top seed Iga Swiatek in the women’s singles semi-finals. Gauff’s clash with Swiatek, who is a time-time winner of the Italian Open, is due to start not before 9am ET/6am PT.

If Gauff beats the Pole, she could come up against a compatriot in the women’s final. Having knocked out Victoria Azarenka in straight sets yesterday, the in-form Danielle Collins meets the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in today’s second last-four match, with the duo scheduled to go head to head on Center Court at 2:30pm ET/11:30am ET at the earliest.
