TENNIS

When was the last time a British player won Wimbledon men’s or women’s singles?

The tournament is underway at the All England Club, with local fans hoping to see a British player go far in the third major of the year.

A Grand Slam tournament feels different. There are only four a year and the very best players do their best to entertain the attendants but also to go as far as possible in the event.

After the Australian Open and the French Open, now it’s time for Wimbledon, the oldest and most prestigious tennis competition. Traditionally, British players have done well in their favorite event and there are a few that will give their all to go down in the history books.

It won’t be easy, because Novak Djokovic looks unstoppable in majors and is hungry to keep winning the most important trophies, while Carlos Alcaraz has become a dominant force and seems to be getting better game after game.

Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu and rising men’s star Jack Draper haven’t been able to feature in this year’s edition, but there are players competing who are skilled enough to defeat the favorites. Andy Murray, Cam Norrie, Liam Broady, Katie Boulter, and Harriet Dart are some of them.

The last British player to reign supreme in Wimbledon

While there’s a prolific history of British tennis players winning Wimbledon, the truth is that in recent history, ‘The Big Three’ has conquered the All England Club when it comes to the men’s category.

Novak Djokovic has won the last four titles, while Roger Federer has been victorious eight times in London and Nadal has lifted the trophy twice. Taking into consideration, their dominance, winning a Wimbledon title during that period makes it even more challenging, and that’s what Andy Murray did.

The Glasgow native is the last British player to have won the title. It was back in 2016 when Murray defeated Milos Raonic in the final in three sets, 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2). It was the Scottish’s second Wimbledon trophy, after the one he conquered after beating Djokovic in 2013.

As for women, the last time a British player went all the way in the competition was Virginia Wade in 1977, who came back from losing the first set to win the following two and lift the title (4-6, 6-3, 6-1).
