When was the last time an NHL team from Canada won the Stanley Cup?
Hockey is one of Canada’s most followed sports, but the Stanley Cup has remained out of the country’s borders for a long time.
Canada is known for its beautiful cities and weather, landscapes and wild fauna, and...ice hockey. Ironically, the country hasn’t been successful regarding its Stanley Cup fate over the years, although the dynamics could change this season.
Although Canada was the dominant country from the NHL’s early days into the 80′s, the US took control of the competition and the Stanley Cup from then on.
Probably the biggest reason is that out of the 32 NHL teams, only seven are Canada-based, which reduces their success ratio considerably.
However, Canadian fans are hopeful to finally see a national team lift the prestigious title, as the Edmonton Oilers will feature in the Stabley Cup final against the Florida Panthers.
Kris Knoblauch’s men beat the Dallas Stars to become the Western Conference champions, while the Panthers will play in the final for the second consecutive year after defeating the New York Rangers 2-1 on Saturday night.
When was the last time a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup?
The Edmonton Oilers are one step away from making history in the NHL and the Stanley Cup. The team could win the trophy for the sixth time and, probably even more importantly, they could take it to Canadian soil after a long title drought.
If they come out on top against Florida, it will be the first time in 31 years that a Canadian-based team reigns supreme.
The Montreal Canadiens were the last to lift the Stanley Cup trophy for Canada. Brian Bellows, Patrick Roy, and Guy Carbonneau led a rock-solid team that only lost four playoff games to go all the way and get the glory after getting the better of the Los Angeles Kings four games to one.
Since then, only six Canadian teams have made it to the finals. The Montreal Canadiens were the last to get to the final round, but they couldn’t break the curse after falling to the defending champions Tampa Bay Lightning.
