Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe (men’s draw) along with Emma Navarro and Jessica Pegula are the sole US representatives as the 2024 US Open reaches the quarter final stage. The fans at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadow are expectant that this could be the year when a homegrown player finally gets to lift the trophy at the end of the week.

Who was the last American to win the US Open?

Sloane Stephens made history for the U.S. back in 2017 when she beat Venus Williams 6-1, 0-6, 7-5 in the semifinals before triumphing 6-3, 6-0 over then-15th seed Madison Keys in the final to earn her first Grand Slam singles title.

She didn’t only win a U.S. open, but she also became the first American woman other than Venus and Serena Williams to win a major since Jennifer Capriati in 2002.

Since then, Stephens remains the last American tennis player to win the US Open, in both the women’s and men’s category.

Serena Williams was close enough in 2018 and 2019, but was beaten by Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu respectively. Keys and Jennifer Brady also reached the semifinals in 2018 and 2020 respectively with incredible performances, but didn’t make it all the way through.

Last of the men: Andy Roddick

As for the men’s category, Andy Roddick held the title back in 2003 when he beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final to have his first and only Grand Slam victory.

Along with Andre Agassi, Roddick managed to reach the final in 2005 and 2006 respectively but both were taken down by Federer. That was the last time a man from the United States reached the semifinals of the US Open.
