When we talk about tennis’s greatest players, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams are some of the names hard to forget.

While there have been several players here and there who have won crucial tennis tournaments like the US Open, they have not consistently kept up their titles like the legends mentioned above- which is why their names are not easily remembered.

Sloane Stephens is a good example of this.

Who was the last American to win the US Open?

Stephens made history for the U.S. back in 2017 when she beat Venus Williams 6-1, 0-6, 7-5 in the semifinals before triumphing 6-3, 6-0 over then-15th seed Madison Keys in the final to earn her first Grand Slam singles title.

She didn’t only win a U.S. open, but she also became the first American woman other than Venus and Serena Williams to win a major since Jennifer Capriati in 2002.

Since then, Stephens remains the last American tennis player to win the US Open, in both the women’s and men’s category. At the 2022 US Open, Stephens was defeated by the No. 1 Iga Swiatek, 6-3, 6-2, on Thursday.

Serena Williams was close enough in 2018 and 2019, but was beaten by Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu respectively. Keys and Jennifer Brady also reached the semifinals in 2018 and 2020 respectively with incredible performances, but didn’t make it all the way through.

Last of the men: Andy Roddick

As for the men’s category, Andy Roddick held the title back in 2003 when he beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final to have his first and only Grand Slam victory.

Along with Andre Agassi, Roddick managed to reach the final in 2005 and 2006 respectively but both were taken down by Federer. That was the last time a man from the United States reached the semifinals of the US Open.

No other U.S. men’s tennis player has won a Grand Slam since.

Next promising American?

Frances Tiafoe is a name that’s starting to ring all sorts of bells across the tennis world. The 24-year-old just had a shock victory against four-time US Open champion Nadal at the 2022 US Open.

If Tiafoe keeps his consistency, he can be the next American to make the list of US Open winners.
