When will Carlos Alcaraz play next? The Spanish tennis star’s upcoming tournaments
The world No. 2 finished the clay season in style by winning the French Open, and will now focus on the grass events.
Spring is coming to a close and in tennis it means it’s time for the grass season. After completing a great French Open, Carlos Alcaraz will take a break from competition to spend some time with his family and friends.
However, the now three-time major champion will return to work shortly, as he will have to get used to the upcoming grass tournaments, a very different surface where the game is way faster and the ball hardly bounces compared to the clay courts.
This year’s grass tournaments have already started in Hertogenbosch and Stuttgart, two 250 events that are useful for the players to make the transition to the grass, but Alcaraz is not playing in any of them, as he hasn’t had the time to recover from his efforts at the French Open.
When will Alcaraz play again?
Alcaraz will make his return to competition soon, as he will defend 2,500 ranking points during the grass tour, as he was the Queen’s champion (17-23 June) defeating Alex de Minaur in the final, and lifted the Wimbledon trophy (1-14 July), where he beat Novak Djokovic.
After that, Alcaraz will compete in his first Olympic Games, in a special scenario, at the Roland Garros facilities, where he just won the title. He will play doubles with Rafa Nadal in Paris.
After not being able to win the Australian Open, Alcaraz will try to win his second Wimbledon title in what would be his fourth Grand Slam event trophy. He will be the favorite in London, especially after his performance on grass. Moreover, he’s the defending champion and his confidence levels will be high enough if he gets to the tournament in good shape.
Alcaraz’s objectives: Queen’s, Wimbledon, and the Olympic Games
Although Alcaraz recently won the French Open title after a few battles, he’s excited to return to the grass courts and revealed his next objectives.
“I will play in Queen’s, Wimbledon and the Olympic Games. That’s my closest calendar. If everything goes as planned, of course. If it doesn’t go my way on the grass tour, I will make the adjustments needed or talk to the team to see what we can do. But as of now, those three tournaments are the next ones”, he said.
Depending on how he does in London, and considering the Olympic Games will be played on clay, Alcaraz could play a tournament on that surface as preparation.
In the July 15-21 week, there are events in Hamburg (500), Gstaad, and Bastad (250). The following week, the Kitzbuhel and the Umag events will be played (250). The Spanish maestro won the Croatian tournament in 2021 and lost the final two years ago against Jannik Sinner.
