Alexandra Palace - the home of darts
The Alexandra Palace, also known as Ally Pally, in London, has been the venue for the World Darts Championship since 2008. Before that, the event took place at the Circus Tavern in Essex from 1994 to 2007.
The Alexandra Palace is a listed grade II entertainment and sports venue located in the London Borough of Haringey, between Wood Green and Muswell Hill. It was built on the site of Tottenham Wood and Tottenham Wood Farm.
British architect and engineer, John Johnson and Alfred Meeson constructed the building and first opened in 1873. However, a fire broke out two weeks after its opening, and Johnson rebuilt it. The primary purpose of the Alexandra Palace is to serve as a public center of recreation, education, and entertainment, and it was intended to be North London’s equivalent of the Crystal Palace in South London. It is often referred to as “Ally Pally”.
Hosting a popular tournament every year that consistently sells out likely contributes to its success., and being called the “Home of Darts.”
