Bing used to orgainze annual bash
Celebrities from the sports, movie, and music industries will strut their swing in the first of two events where amateurs link up with golfers on the links. The stage couldn’t be more inviting for those looking to test their game against the PGA’s best in one of golf’s biggest weekends.
The first ever tournament was organized all the way back in 1937 by Bing Crosby, and it was know as the National Pro-Amateur. It was more cordially knows the Crosby Clambake, and the inaugural tournament at Rancho Santa Fe Club was won by Sam Snead. The tournament eventually moved to Monterey Peninsula and got rebranded in 1986 when AT&T took over as the primary sponsor.
Since then there has been a rich history of high profile celebrities attending the Pro-Am, and this year will be no different. “Building upon the rich tradition established by Bing Crosby and his celebrity friends, it is incredible to bring all these talented amateur golfers together for the week at Pebble Beach,” said Steve John, CEO of Monterey Peninsula Foundation, host of the Pro-Am. “Add in the fact they are here to play in the most charitable tournament on the PGA TOUR and it’s a win-win all the way around.”
