Who are the former British Open winners playing at Royal Liverpool?
The British Open begins on Thursday, July 20th at Royal Liverpool Golf Club and promises to be one of the most memorable in the tournament’s 151-year history.
As we prepare for The Open in Hoylake, the field has come into focus and with that, we’ve noticed that there are a few former champions who will be playing at the historic club. Let’s take a look at who they are.
The British Open: Lay of the Land
With the field now set for the 151st British Open aka, The Open, we’ve got a number of players who’ve actually experienced the honor of winning the event and a surprise absentee who hasn’t missed the tournament since 1997. Indeed, The Open is set to be quite a showcase of some of golf’s best right here and now. Of course, some of these men are currently involved in the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, which is to say it will be interesting to see the manner in which they arrive at one of golf’s most storied events.
Regarding who’s the big name that’s missing out, that would be Sergio Garcia. Despite finishing within the top 30 at the US Open just last month, the Spaniard failed to make the cut in local qualifying and so will be nothing more than a spectator. As for who’s favored, the general consensus is that it’s former champion Rory McIlroy’s tournament to lose. The Northern Irishman remains in contention as we head to Round 3 in the Scottish Open and appears to be playing some stellar golf in recent weeks. There’s also world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in the mix, as well as 2023 Masters winner John Rahm. Interestingly, neither of the two has won The Open before, which brings us to the question of which players in the field have.
