As the PGA Tour and new Saudi-backed golf league, LIV, continue to battle through their own definitions of ethical competition, players who have joined LIV Golf are getting ready to compete at the Open Championship, also known as the “British Open”.

Despite efforts to disallow the players on the LIV Tour from attending future major competition, they continue to be eligible to compete at the Old Course in Scotland.

However, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews that runs the tournament, informed the chief executive of the LIV Golf series, Greg Norman, that he was not welcome at any Open events – including the Celebration of Champions event or the Champions’ Dinner. Norman, who has lured several former PGA Tour golf players to the new league, is an Open champion in 1986 and 1993.

What are LIV players doing wrong?

Most recently, Rory Mcllroy and three-time Open champion Tiger Woods shared their respective opinions on former PGA Tour golfers turned LIV. Unwavering in his criticism, Woods said he didn’t understand how these golfers “turned their back on what has allowed them to get to this position.” Additionally, the 46-year-old expressed concern for the development of young players based on the LIV tournaments format and how the possibility of being banned from historic Majors could damage their early careers.

“It would be sad to see some of these young kids never get a chance to experience it and experience what we’ve got a chance to experience and walk these hallowed grounds and play in these championships,” said Woods.

Heavily criticized Phil Mickelson, as well as Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Brooks Koepka are among some of the recognizable players who have left the PGA Tour for the LIV Golf series. Mickelson, Johnson, and Koepka headline the field of 23 LIV players competing this weekend.
