Who is Brandel Chamblee? Why is he taking so much abuse about the LIV - PGA merger?
The dust is far from settling after Tuesday mornings shocking announcement that the PGA Tour and LIV Golf will be joining forces along with DP World Tour in an attempt to merge the three entities and unite golf after a turbulent last two years.
The merger to end all mergers
The Golf world was torn in two shortly after the creation of the Saudi-backed Tour gave golfers an option to move away from the PGA Tour. With Greg Norman as it’s CEO, LIV Golf promised fatter paychecks and shorter seasons for those who had grown tired of the PGA Tour and it’s schedule.
Golfers, legends of the game and media members quickly started to take sides and this created even more tension between the two organizations and those who side with either the PGA or LIV. One of the most boisterous people from pro-PGA was Brandel Chamblee, who was on the frontlines since this sporting civil war sparked.
Chamblee was on the Tour for nearly 20 years, winning one tournament and making the top-100 on the PGA money list seven years straight. After losing his Tour Card in 2003, he signed on with the Golf Channel working as the lead TV analyst.
Chamblee’s tongue-in-cheek about LIV
As a long-time, faithful member of the PGA, Chamblee didn’t bite his tongue when it came to his feelings about the new golf league and it’s funders. He attacked the organization, the financial backers, Saudi Arabia and it’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.
He has been vocal on his opinion of golfers like Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. He even went as far to invite Phil Mickelson on to the Golf Channel set and talk about the state of golf and the direction it’s heading. Chamblee extended the invite for what would have been a mouthwatering debate within the last week, but with the unfolding of recent events there will plenty of people tuning in to hear what the Golf Channel analyst has to say about the merger.
There has been plenty of backlash directed at Chamblee in the early hours after the decision has been made, a decision that apparently none of the players of the PGA were warned or alerted of.
Chamblee in the Twitter crosshairs
This year’s PGA Champion and LIV Golf castaway Brooks Koepka was one of the first to take a shot at Brandel Chamblee via social media, but he wasn’t the only one.
Members of the golf world and fans alike have taken to Twitter, eagerly anticipating a response from the PGA Tour loyalist and Golf Channel analyst.
