Who is caddying for Scottie Scheffler today at the PGA Championship? Where is Ted Scott?
The world’s best golfer has had a wild few days and now faces a change of caddy, but what happened to his old one and who is the replacement?
Despite the turbulence of the last two days in Kentucky for Scottie Scheffler, golf’s top player is actually in a good position as he prepares for Round 3 of the 2024 PGA Championship. Yet, there is one change that he will have to deal with as he takes to the course on Saturday.
Why has Scottie Scheffler changed caddy and who is he?
The PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club has been anything but par for the course. So far, we’ve seen world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler arrested and charged with second-degree assault of an officer, his subsequent mugshot, and a fatal accident that significantly delayed the start of Round 2. Then, we saw Scheffler return to play after which he more than impressively sank six birdies before finishing on -9 in the second round to secure the third-place spot on the leaderboard.
With all of this in mind, it’s a little surprising to note that Scheffler will be facing yet another unforeseen circumstance as he prepares for the day’s play and that’s the absence of his regular caddy Ted Scott. According to reports, Scott who has caddied for Scheffler since 2021, has left the PGA Championship ahead of Round 3 due to his daughter’s high school graduation which he will fly home to Louisiana for. It is understood that he will return for the final round of play on Sunday. ‘Probably Saturday late night, I’m sure they’ll do a little celebration afterward,’ Scheffler said when asked when Scott will fly back to Louisville. “That’s something we talked about from the beginning of our relationship was family always comes first, and it’s the same thing for me as it is for my caddie,” Scheffler said. “It was a pretty easy decision. He told me at the beginning of this year that that was the date that it was, so I got a backup caddie lined up.”
As for who the backup is, that would be Scheffler’s long-time friend and PGA Tour Chaplain, Brad Payne, who will be on the bag for him in the third round. To be clear, there are no rules that prevent players from switching caddies mid-tournament, meaning Scheffler can in fact alternate between both Scott and Payne until the former returns from Louisiana. That leaves just one question: Can Scottie Scheffler continue his impressive run and actually win the PGA Championship following what was an eventful couple of days?
