Brian Harman, who had not won on the PGA Tour since 2017 and was considered a longshot at 175-1 odds to win his first major championship, defied expectations with his exceptional putting skills at Royal Liverpool. His performance over the week earned him the title Champion Golfer of the Year for 2023 at the 151st Open Championship. Harman proved himself as the top golfer of the week, leaving no room for doubt and securing the coveted Claret Jug.

GOLF:

Harman achieved his first major victory by winning the tournament with a score of 13 under. He won by six strokes over Jon Rahm, Jason Day, Tom Kim, and Sepp Straka, who all tied for second place. Harman is the first American to win his first major at an Open event since Stewart Cink in 2009. At age 37, he is also the oldest first-time major winner since Sergio Garcia won the 2017 Masters at the same age. Harman is now the 15th American to win The Open in the last 20 years. He continued the trend of 54-hole leaders who have taken a five-stroke-or-greater advantage into the final round at majors since 2000, maintaining a 100% success rate and, in that way, joining the company of Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Peter Thomson, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIlroy as winners of the Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool.

After Harman’s impressive win at the Open, it would be interesting to see where he placed in the top 10 of the three rankings recognized by the PGA this Monday.
