Who is Jermell Charlo? The US boxer who will fight Canelo Alvarez

The American, undisputed super welterweight champion, will face the Mexican champion for his four super middleweight belts on Saturday evening.

Update:
Jermell Charlo reta a Canelo: "Con esa actuación, no me gana"

On Saturday night, Canelo Álvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) will stake his undisputed super middleweight title against Jermell Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The American also owns four belts but at super welterweight. The first opponent mentioned for the Mexican was Jermall Charlo (32-0-0, 22 KO), Jermall’s twin brother and WBC middleweight champion.

Who is Jermell Charlo, Canelo’s rival?

Jermell Charlo (33 years old) is the undisputed super welterweight champion and has a record of 35 victories, 19 by KO, one defeat, and one no. He has a twin brother, Jermall, who is also a boxer and is the WBC middleweight champion. He remains undefeated and has won 32 fights, 22 before the limit. Jermall was the first Charlo who was considered to face Canelo since there is only one category difference between the two, but finally, the chosen one was Jermell (he will have to go up two).

Both brothers began to fight due to the influence of their father, who was a boxer. Jermell had an excellent amateur career. He earned a bronze medal at the 2005 Junior Olympics when he was 15 and finished with a record of 58 wins and eight losses. He debuted as a professional at the age of 17 and won by unanimous decision.

In May 2016, the American boxer won his first world championship title. During the eighth round, he managed to knock out John Jackson (21-4-0, 16 KO) and claim the WBC super welterweight belt. He successfully defended his title three times before suffering his first professional defeat in December 2018. Tony Harrison (29-4-1, 21 KO) beat him by unanimous decision, but the boxer recovered and won the rematch by KO in the eleventh round. He then began to unify the division, winning the WBA and IBF belts from Jeison Rosario (23-4-1, 17 KO) by knocking him out in the eighth round in September 2020. In May 2022, he secured his fourth world championship title by defeating Brian Carlos Castaño (17-1-2, 12 KO) before the limit and claiming the WBO super welterweight crown, which was the only title he had yet to win.
