NASCAR driver Kyle Busch has announced through social networks that he was arrested in the city of Cancún, Mexico because he had packed a gun in his suitcase while on vacation in the country.

Through his Twitter account, Busch apologized for the situation and acknowledged his mistake, in addition to immediately collaborating with the Mexican authorities who arrested him and accepting the corresponding penalties.

“I have a valid concealed carry permit from my local authority and adhere to all firearms laws, but I made a mistake by forgetting it was in my bag. The discovery of the firearm led to my arrest while the situation was resolved. I did not know Mexican law and had no intention of bringing a firearm into Mexico," he wrote on social media.

Busch assured us that he considers the matter closed, and that after the arrest he returned directly to North Carolina. The arrest took place on January 27, when private security personnel from Cancún International Airport detected the weapon, a .380 caliber with a loaded magazine, while passing his luggage through the inspection platform; six live hollow point rounds were also found.

Sentencing

The Quintana Roo State’s Attorney General’s Office sentenced the NASCAR driver to three years and six months in prison, as well as a $1,100 fine.

The statement from the Mexican Attorney General’s Office does not explain how, if at all, Busch’s 3.5-year prison sentence will be handled. The statement revealed that six live hollow point rounds were found inside Busch’s pistol.

For now, Busch is already on US soil and was even present on Sunday during the race of champions that was held at the Memorial Coliseum.
