Who is Liam Smith? Height, weight, career record, stats and KOs
As he prepares for his bout against his countryman, we’re taking a look at the British boxer and his record ahead of his second clash with the veteran.
The highly-anticipated rematch between the most bitter of middleweight rivals, Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr. will take place at the AO Arena in Manchester on Saturday, September 2nd and we’re sure it’s going to be a good one.
Who is Liam Smith?
Born to a family full of boxers in Liverpool, England on July 27th, 1988, Liam Smith was one of six children - three of whom are also professional boxers today. By the time he made his professional boxing debut at the age of 20, on October 10th, 2008, he had already seen his fair share of trials. Citing the roughness of the area in which he grew up, Smith explained that boxing essentially saved his life. “I was doing other daft stuff, like getting brought home by police, smashing windows, fighting on the streets, and other little silly things that lead up to going off the rails. But when I started boxing it would keep me in at night,” he said.
Now 14 years into his career, Smith held the WBO light middleweight title from 2015 to 2016, while at the regional level, he has held multiple light-middleweight championships, including the British and Commonwealth titles between 2012 and 2015. As mentioned before, his upcoming fight against Chris Eubank Jr. will actually be the second time that the two men meet, with the first having been earlier this year on January 21st. Smith won that bout via TKO, a result that came courtesy of a pair of stunning knockdowns in the 4th round. It goes without saying this match is highly anticipated.
Liam Smith by the numbers
Standing at 177cm with a reach of 176cm, Smith is the man fans call ‘Beefy’, and with good reason as his imposing 154 lb (69.9kg) frame demonstrates. Where his record is concerned, the super welterweight boxer has fought a total of 37 fights of which he has won 33, lost three, and drawn one. To date, he has got 20 KOs to his name. Incidentally, the 35-year-old’s last fight was against the man he’s about to face in a rematch.
