The United States has the goal of retaining the Ryder Cup in Rome and achieving its first victory on foreign soil since 1993, specifically at the Belfry.

Having secured a dominant win at Whistling Straits in 2021, the Stars and Stripes are considered favorites to defend the trophy.

Captain Zach Johnson had numerous options to consider, but it appears that his selection of players may have been influenced more by their personalities than their playing abilities.

Here are the 12 players who will represent Team USA at the Ryder Cup

  1. Scottie Scheffler
  2. Wyndham Clark
  3. Brian Harman
  4. Patrick Cantlay
  5. Max Homa
  6. Xander Schauffele
  7. Collin Morikawa
  8. Jordan Spieth
  9. Justin Thomas
  10. Brooks Koepka
  11. Sam Burns
  12. Ricke Fowler

That’s an impressive group of golfers who will be defending the stars and stripes starting on September 29 at the Marco Simone Country Club located just outside of Rome.

Who are the captain’s picks?

Rickie Fowler has played great golf this year after a rough patch of a few years. He’s a crowd favorite and played very well this season with a T6 at the Charles Schwab Challenge back in May, then T9 at the Memorial Tournament, T5 at the US Open and a win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in July. Since then he’s been up and down, but we’ll have to see what Johnson decides.

Jordan Spieth and Collin Morikawa both made the team because of their quality on the course and their chemistry off the course, which Zach Johnson has taken into account with these two captain’s picks.

Justin Thomas hasn’t had a great or even a good year, but he’s going to Rome. Definitely one of the most liked guys on the team, which is important, hopefully he can get his game together before Sep. 29 rolls around.

Brooks Koepka got the pick. He’s controversial as a LIV golfer, but he seems to be liked by most of the guys on the PGA Tour. He won the PGA Championship and was T2 at the Masters. He knows how to win on the big stage and that’s why Zach Johnson decided to take him.

They’re talented. They’re fierce competitors. They want to be there. It’s great playing in the US in front of our fans. Certain individuals are built for difficulty and walking into a hostile environment. We have experience and new blood. Our experienced guys can help the rookies. These players are comfortable with the uncomfortable.

Zach Johnson
