BRITISH OPEN

Who made the cut at the 2023 British Open? What big names won’t be playing this weekend?

After some stellar play on Friday, unexpected leader Brian Harman stood out in a field that’s now been reduced, with some notable names not making the cut.

If we’ve learned one thing across the first two rounds of play at Royal Liverpool, it’s that the course is as unforgiving as it is demanding. From the quickness of the terrain to the breeze, Hoylake has been anything but simple for those who have managed to answer its many questions.

Royal Liverpool proves too much for Morikawa, Thomas & Johnson

On Friday, the 2023 Open Championship provided us with a few high-profile casualties. Of course, one of them is not 36-hole leader Brian Harman who stands at 10 under for the moment. Sadly, the same can’t be said for Collin Morikawa who entered the tournament having narrowly missed out on victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. What’s worse is that the 2021 Champion Golfer of the Year actually managed to make birdie on his final hole, but it wasn’t enough as he ultimately stood at 4 over with the cutline hovering at 3 by late afternoon.

Yet, Morikawa wasn’t the only one. There was also Justin Thomas who would have likely felt confident after an even par on Friday. Unfortunately, the two-time major champion’s opening 82 proved to be too much to overcome, and with that, he will now be taking in the rest of the tournament as a spectator. Worse still is the fact that the result means he won’t be present for the 2023 FedEx Cup Playoffs. “There’s nobody that shot 82 that hit some of the quality shots that I did yesterday,” said Thomas. “It doesn’t make sense. I’ll hit shots like a No. 1 player in the world, and then I’ll make a 9 on my last hole of the tournament. I don’t know if it’s a focus thing or I’m just putting too much pressure on myself or what it is, but when I figure it out, I’ll be better for it.” Truth be told, this is the latest in a string of failures for Thomas, with the 15-time PGA Tour winner now missing the cut in his third consecutive major this season. This of course brings us to Dustin Johnson, having done the opposite - he qualified for the last three. Yet, just like Thomas, the former world No. 1 was unable to break 80 in one of the rounds and ended with a total of 13-over 155, missing the cut by nine.

What about the others who failed to make the cut?

Believe it or not, the trio above were joined by a few other household names, such as Tony Finau who had never failed to make the cut in St. Andrews, but found himself a stroke behind the cut with four holes to play. That’s not to say it wasn’t rescuable, however, three straight bogeys from Nos. 15-17 were enough to end that record. If you’re wondering which stars did make the cut, we can tell you that though it was a close shave, Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Cantlay, and Robert MacIntyre all did on 3-over. As for the others who didn’t, take a look below where you can also see their current status in the Official World Golf Rankings.
