The 126th edition of the Boston Marathon, the world’s oldest annual 26-mile race, became the stage for a history-making moment.

Women’s race winner makes marathon history

Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya won the women’s race, and in doing so became the only athlete to have ever won the New York and Boston Marathons, as well as an Olympic marathon gold. She achieved this feat of winning the most acclaimed races within only eight months. It was also the 50th anniversary of women being officially allowed to compete in the Boston Marathon.

Jepchirchir finished in two hours, 21 minutes, and two seconds, edging out Ethiopian Ababel Yeshaneh, with whom she exchanged leads several times in the final mile. Yeshaneh crossed the finish line four seconds after the winner.

Another Kenyan, Mary Ngugi, finished third.

The highest ranking American was Nell Rojas who made it to 10th, while Olympic bronze medalist Molly Seidel had to drop out of the race after suffering from hip pain.

Boston Marathon men’s race: Dominated by Kenya

On the men’s side, the Kenyans dominated. Evans Chebet won the men’s title with a time of 2:06:51, recording his first major marathon victory.

It was a 1-2-3 podium finish for Kenya- Lawrence Cherono finished 30 seconds behind Chebet, while Benson Kipruto rounded out the podium sweep with 2:07:27.

Cherono won the race in 2019, while Kipruto was the victor last year. The two former winners pushed themselves in the last two miles to overtake Gabriel Geay of Tanzania.

Scott Fauble got the highest ranking among the Americans, finishing in seventh place with a personal best time of 2:08:52.

The number of participants for this year’s race was limited to 30,000, and it is believed that this year’s field is one of the best in the race’s history. This is attributed to the fact that the London marathon, another major race usually held in spring, has been pushed back again because of the pandemic.
