Who won the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest?
There was a new champion crowned in the men’s division of the Nathans’ Hot Dog Eating Contest while Miki Sudo won her 10th in a world record performance.
There is a new king of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island’s annual Fourth of July glizzy extravaganza. Patrick Bertoletti earned the Mustard Belt in the men’s division while the Queen of the competition, Miki Sudo added a 10th Ketchup Belt to her already impressive resume.
Sudo takes spotlight in Chestnut-less contest
There was a noticeable void on stage from Surf and Stillwell on the famous New York island. Joey Chestnut, the all time record holder with 16 Nathan’s titles, and largely considered the greatest eater the world has ever seen was absent after getting banned from the contest in wake of his sponsorship deal with Impossible Foods (a plant-based meat substitute company).
It is the Fourth of July and the festivities had to go on. The day started with the dental hygienist, Sudo, downing a new world record 51 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Her 51 glizzys were three more than her previous world record of 48 and became the first woman to cross the 50 hot dog barrier. The 38 year old outlasted 14 other competitors including Japanese rival Mayoi Ebihara who came in second after gobbling down 37 hot dogs.
It was a landslide of epic proportions and most certainly a nod to Joey “Jaws” who was in El Paso, Texas doing a hot dog competition of his own with some military families at Fort Bliss. “I mean, I finally did it,” Sudo told ESPN’s Tiffany Greene. “We finally beat 50. So much of this is thanks to (second-place finisher) Mayoi Ebihara, who was pushing me so much. Obviously I prepared even more because I knew she was going to bring it.”
Badlands set record,
In between women’s and men’s contests, Eric “Badlands” Booker shocked the world by downing a gallon of pink lemonade in world record 21 seconds without spilling a single drop.
In the men’s division it was Patrick Bertoletti taking the throne from Joey Chestnut and winning his first Mustard Belt ever after slamming 58 hot dogs. He was the number 9 ranked eater in the world, and was quite an underdog. He broke his personal record of 55 hot dogs to take his first ever Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, beating out favoirte Geoffery Esper who ate 53 hot dogs and Sudo’s fiancé Nick Wehry.
