Without any PGA Tour events this weekend, all eyes are on the Emerald Isle and the Irish Open. But what’s the story behind the green ribbons?

Why are golfers wearing green ribbons at the 2025 Irish Open?

Update:

Angel Hidalgo has had an amazing third round on Saturday at the K Club in Ireland. The Spaniard has shot 9-under par to move his way into first place. The leaders after two rounds still have a few holes to play, so Hidalgo might not finish on to of the leaderboard, but chances are he will be playing in the final group on Sunday.

While we’re used to seeing lots of green on golf courses, this week players have been seen wearing a green ribbon, most of them on their hats. We had to do a bit of investigation, but we found out what the idea is all about.

Shane Lowry spoke about the experience in his pre-tournament news conference. “Obviously Make-A-Wish is a great organisation and do a lot for kids,” he said.

Why are players wearing green ribbons at the Irish Open?

Let’s get straight to it. The reason golfers are wearing green ribbons is to support the Made-A-Wish Foundations. Golfers at the K Club in Kildare, Ireland have backed the initiative and that’s why we’re seeing so many ribbons on hats today.

The project has been backed by the tournament sponsor, who has pledged to donate 3 euros for every person wearing something green. Amgen will also donate 300 euros for every birdie or better.

Lowry continued to talk about his experience with 11-year-old Daire Coyle, “He told me his favourite player is Rory McIlroy, which is... oh, well, he’s probably mine as well,” he said.
