Why do they fight in the NHL, and what are the rules of fighting in ice hockey?

Fighting has been a part of the NHL for 100 years, and is not penalized as it would be in other sports. It’s against the rules, but not totally forbidden.

Ice hockey is a sport that allows fighting, making it one of the sport’s most distinctive features. Although there has been a decrease in recent years, fighting is still frequently a significant aspect of the game. The following information contains all the necessary details.

The National Hockey League’s official rulebook states that a fight is considered official if one or more players punch or attempt to punch an opponent repeatedly. According to the rulebook, a fight can occur when two players engage in wrestling, making it challenging for the linesmen to intervene and separate them. On the ice, two players can engage in a fight, and it is also possible for multiple fights to occur simultaneously

But what are the rules on fighting in Hockey?

Referees have the authority to decide which penalties to enforce and assess the level of responsibility of the participants for initiating or prolonging the altercation.

In Hockey, being ejected from the game is the most severe penalty one can receive. However, engaging in a brawl would result in a “major penalty,” which would require the player to sit out for five minutes during the game.

According to Rule 46, “A fight shall be deemed to have occurred when at least one player punches or attempts to punch an opponent repeatedly or when two players wrestle in such a manner as to make it difficult for the Linesmen to intervene and separate the combatants.”
