Will Terence Crawford fight at welterweight again?
The American recently defeated Israil Madrimov to become the WBA super welterweight champion, but will he fight at 147 lbs again?
Terence Crawford is a man on a mission. He has been undefeated since he turned pro and has been beating all of his 41 opponents to become one of the modern greats in the sport of boxing.
The Omaha-bred fighter recorded a historic performance against Errol Spence Jr. last summer to become the undisputed welterweight champion. A fight that most boxing fans and experts wanted to see due to both men’s boxing skills that ended up being a masterpiece from Bud.
After that, he wanted to keep making history by taking on Israil Madrimov in a different weight class and go up in weight at 168 lbs to face Saul Alvarez for the super middleweight crown.
Will Crawford go down to compete at welterweight again?
Although he could go back to welterweight to face some big names like Jaron Ennis, Crawford is just focused on the super welterweight category.
Although Crawford thought about defending his belts against Spence Jr. in a rematch, the fighter from Dallas underwent cataract surgery a year ago, so both men never met inside the ring again. While he waited for Spence Jr. to recover, as they both had a rematch clause in their contract, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) stripped Crawford of the title and the interim champ, Ennis, was elevated to full champion.
A few months later, the World Boxing Council (WBC) reclassified Crawford to ‘champion in recess’. That means he vacates the belt but he will be able to fight the new titleholder if he so desires.
After beating Madrimov, he vacated the last of his welterweight titles, the WBA, with Eimantas Stanionis elevated to full champion. With his last move, Crawford made it clear he wants to stay in the super welterweight division, where he may try to become the undisputed king.
