Checo Pérez: ‘I have all the support of Red Bull to win in Mexico’
Sergio Perez is eager to win the Mexican Grand Prix this weekend, and he is confident that Red Bull is supporting him in his bid to win at home.
Sergio Pérez dreams of winning the Mexico City Grand Prix and when asked if Red Bull would help him to achieve it, Checo said that he has the full support of the team. However, he adds that in the end, it all depends on what he can do with his RB18 car.
In a press conference prior to the Mexican GP, Checo did not hide his desire to take the checkered flag in the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, which will likely be packed. He hopes to improve on his third-place podium finish in his country last year.
“I hope to win, I’m coming for that, I have the opportunity to do it, it would be incredible to be able to fulfill that dream in my career,” he said.
“I have the full support of Red Bull. If the difference can be made, it will be made, but in the end it’s up to me, I have to be perfect to win the race” said Pérez.
Close to fulfilling a dream
Checo’s dream of winning in Mexico has a good chance of becoming a reality. The Mexican driver has in his hands the best car on the grid: the RB18. In addition, with Verstappen’s second consecutive championship and the Red Bull constructors’ title already in the bag, the focus is now on Pérez, as the Austrian team wants to win 1-2 in the drivers’ world championship for the first time in its history.
The 32-year-old arrives in Mexico in third place in the drivers’ standings, engaged in an arduous battle with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. However, Perez is not losing sleep over landing in second place. “Without a doubt, winning Mexico matters more to me because it’s a dream I’ve had since I was a child. Being runner-up in the world has never been my dream,” he said.
Victory in Monaco, the most special in his career
Looking back at the 2022 season where he has nine podiums, two wins and one pole position, Checo shared that his victory in Monaco is undoubtedly the most memorable.
“Winning Monaco is the most special moment in my career. You always dream of racing there,” he said, adding that a victory on that track gives you a special place in F1 history. He said his victory in Singapore came after a very intense race, and that he is excited for future competitions. “I hope better moments come,” said Pérez.
