Lando Norris was fastest in the first practice, setting a 1m18.564s lap at Albert Park, edging out the Red Bull of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia GP winner Max Verstappen by just 0.018 seconds. Norris, Verstappen, Russell, Leclerc and Tsunoda occupied the first five positions. Leclerc crossed the line first in FP2 with a quickest time of 1m17.277s ahead of Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso.
“I will say that we are in a better position than the first two races,” Leclerc said afterwards. “However Red Bull weren’t pushing yet, so we’ve got to wait and see where their potential is at. I think they are still ahead, but we might have our best shot this weekend since the beginning of the season. It feels good for now. We’ve had a positive day from the first laps in FP1 to the end of FP2, so that’s a good start”.
