Formula 1 results: Italian Grand Prix starting grid at Monza, Leclerc at pole
Pole for Charles Leclerc in Ferrari territory ahead of Max Verstappen, but it will be George Russell who starts second due to others’ grid-place penalties.
It’s the 16th round of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took pole position at the Italian Grand Prix which takes place this weekend at the Monza circuit. The Monegasque made the best time on Saturday 1:20.161 by just over a tenth over Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who will start further back due to the five-position penalty he is carrying.
Carlos Sainz, who drove the fastest lap, will go to the back of the grid (18th) due to changes to his engine. Fernando Alonso of Alpine did not set time in Q3 because he aborted in his first attempt and the one he did in the second was erased, but he will gain positions due to the penalties of the drivers in front of him.

George Russell of Mercedes, who finished in sixth position, will be the one to accompany Leclerc in the front row. His teammate Lewis Hamilton finished fifth, but will start at 19th place due to penalties.
A total of nine drivers were handed out grid penalties due to engine and gearbox changes, so the results in the qualifying rounds look vastly different from the actual starting grid.

*Sanctioned for engine changes: 5 places (Verstappen and Ocon), 10 places (Pérez), 15 places (Schumacher, Bottas and Magnussen) and at the bottom of the grid (Sainz, Hamilton and Tsunoda).
