Just days before the 2022 Mexican Grand Prix is due to take place, it has been announced that the race will continue on the Formula One calendar for at least another three years. It will maintain its position towards the end of the season, with the 2023 edition set to take place from 27-29 October.

Claudia Scheibam, Head of Government in Mexico City, joined Formula One president Steffano Domenicali and Alejandro Soberón, president of CIE, to announce that the Mexico Grand Prix’s deal, which had been due to expire in 2023, had been extended for a further two years.

This means Mexico’s stint on the calendar will run for a total of at least 10 years after its reintroduction in 2015. It had previously been on the calendar in the 1960s at the Magdalena Mixhuca circuit and between 1986 and 1992 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, the current venue, before a 23-year hiatus.

Mexico Grand Prix: “The Formula One everyone loves”

The Grand Prix shows off the beauty and grandeur of Mexico City to our country and the entire world. Formula One is really important to our city,” beamed Soberón.

Domenicali, meanwhile, was full of praise for the way Mexico has hosted recent editions of the race: “This is the Formula One that we all love: enthusiasm, passion, energy, incredible sporting spirit, great people working together, sharing unique experiences and it’s also a great opportunity for the community. It’s a great chance to show the world the real Mexico.”

‘Checo’ Pérez hoping to become first Mexican to win Mexico Grand Prix

Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez, fresh from winning the 2022 Constructors’ championship with Red Bull Racing, will be the star attraction this coming weekend and will be bidding to become the first Mexican driver to win a home Grand Prix: “I’m really happy that we’re able to bring this great event, this huge party, to Mexico, so we can show what it represents for our country. I’m happy we’re going to be able to host the event for another few years. I hope it’ll be an excellent weekend and that everything goes well for us.”

Pérez finished third at Hermanos Rodríguez last year, with teammate Max Verstappen emerging victorious on the way to winning the Drivers’ championship, which he has successfully defended this year. Verstappen, along with Scottish driver Jim Clark, holds the record for most victories at the Mexican Grand Prix, winning on three occasions.
