Las Vegas Update:

Get ready — Formula 1 is bracing for one of the biggest shake-ups in its history. Starting January 26, 2026, when preseason testing begins in Barcelona, fans will see radically redesigned cars that promise faster racing, more strategy, and greener technology.

Key changes to the cars

  1. Smaller, lighter chassis: Aerodynamic load will drop by 30% with the removal of ground effect.
  2. Reduced drag: Air resistance will be cut by 40%, helping boost straight-line speed.
  3. Dual DRS system: Both front and rear wings will feature adjustable flaps to maximize top speed without sacrificing cornering performance.
  4. Narrower tires: While the width decreases, the wheel diameter remains unchanged.

Power unit revolution

The biggest change comes under the hood. The complex MGU-H system (which recovered heat energy from exhaust gases) is gone. Instead, cars will rely on the MGU-K, an electric motor that recharges during braking, now contributing 50% of total power output. Add in sustainable fuel for the combustion engine, and F1 is taking a major step toward a cleaner future.

Drivers will also have more control over how and when to deploy battery power — whether to attack on straights or defend against rivals.

New race modes

To match the technical overhaul, F1 and the FIA are introducing new terminology and fan-tested concepts:

Overtake Mode: When a driver is within one second of a rival, they can unleash extra electric power to offset lost downforce. This replaces the current DRS system. The amount of energy available will vary by track.

Boost Mode: A push-button system on the steering wheel gives drivers maximum combined power from both the combustion engine and battery. It can be used anywhere on the circuit, in attack or defense, but only for a limited time.
