Who is the Honorary Starter for the 2024 Indianapolis 500?
The countdown is well underway ahead of the 108th edition of the iconic 500 mile race in Indianapolis.
As the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500 looms, all eyes next Sunday will be on Kyle Larson, who has shown that he belongs among the elite at the Brickyard. Starting fifth in the grid behind the three Team Penske cars on pole, the veteran is set to compete in the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte on the same day. 1,100 miles in 24 hours !
The race and the prelude is steeped in tradition from the naming of the Grand Marshall at the Indy 500 Parade, the winner of the race drinking milk and the naming of the Honorary Starter to get the race at the Brickyard underway.
The Indy 500 race is generally one of the key sporting events in the national sports calendar and it’s not uncommon to see high profile celebrities rubbing shoulders with the drivers.
In recent years, Hollywood stars such as Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jeff Baughman, have paired up for the task as honorary starters with previous years the race has seen the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Adam Driver and Miles Teller do the honours at the Brickyard.
For this Sunday’s 108th race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway track actors Austin Butler (Elvis, Dune) and Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) will pair up to serve as the honorary starters and will wave the green flag to kick it off. The pair will alos be doing their but to promote their forthcoming movie The Bikeriders.
