Will Liberty Media buy the commercial rights for the MotoGP from Dorna Sports?
Rumors suggest that the company that owns Formula 1 commercial rights wants to unify its portfolio by buying the rights to the motorcycle championship.
Formula 1 has undergone a remarkable transformation since Liberty Media acquired it. The American media company’s investment in the sport has resulted in significant growth, with a particular focus on improving the fan experience. This has not gone unnoticed in the sports world; many note Liberty’s success with Formula 1.
As a result, there has been speculation that Liberty Media could also be interested in taking over Dorna Sports, which currently controls MotoGP. These rumors first emerged in mid-2023, suggesting that Liberty Media could explore expanding its motorsport portfolio.
If Liberty Media were to acquire Dorna, it would give them control over MotoGP, which is regarded as one of the world’s most exciting and prestigious motorcycle racing championships. The move would undoubtedly generate much interest and excitement among MotoGP fans, who are always eager for new sports developments.
Even the CEO of Dorna, Carmelo Ezpeleta, explained that since the first day of its existence, Dorna has been for sale and that nothing has changed, suggesting that there will be no hurdles if an appropriate offer is on the table.
“The majority shareholders of Dorna are investment funds, which buy things to sell them. We have always been for sale from day one.” Ezpeleta explained.
MotoGP is set to discuss the future of the sport in their upcoming meeting with the MotoGP Manufacturers Association. The discussion will include the sporting and technical rules of the world championship, which are expected to be finalized soon and implemented from 2027 onwards. The meeting is scheduled to take place during the weekend of the Qatar Grand Prix, which marks the beginning of the new World Championship season.
