The Pittsburgh Steelers went into one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL and survived one of the wildest finishes of the year against the Lions in Detroit
Update:

Show key events only

DK Metcalf was caught on the sideline grabbing a DET fans wig and throwing a punch at him. He wasn't punished during the game but you can bet there is going to be some consequences after the game.

On the final play of the game, Goff hit St. Brown at the one yard line and he was held up short of the goal line, but he pitched it and found Goff who took it into the end zone for the game winning TD, but a flag flew on St. Brown for a pass interference and the points were taken off the board and the game was ruled over after a long conversation between the refs.

The Steelers continue to lead the AFC North after this MoTown thriller while the Lions are dangling by a thread with two games to go.

Boswell has been so good all year long, but with a chance to make life really difficult for the Lions, he misses the 37 yard field goal to open the door for Detroit.

The Lions got the ball back and had to hurry down field and that's exactly what they did. Just two minutes after Warren's second TD, it was Jahmyr Gibbs getting into the end zone for the TD to cut the lead to a once score game.

Just a couple minutes after the Lions TD, Warren took his second 45 yard TD into the end zone to look to close the door on the Lions again. They had a 29-17 with 6:40 to go, but that lead was far from safe.

On 4th and 2, with the season in the balance, Goff finds Kalif Raymond on a pass over the middle and he took it to the house for a 27 yard TD mid way through the 4th quarter.

The Steelers would take a two TD lead with this 45 yard Jalen Warren TD rush that seemed like it was going to bury the Lions but they just kept on clawing back.

Just three plays after the fumble by PIT, Goff was sacked in the end zone. Two points for the Steelers and the Lions had to punt the ball back to them. Those three plays would be the only ones the Lions would run in the 3rd quarter.

The Steelers took their opening drive of the 2nd half all the way down inside the DET 10, but Washington fumbled the ball and the Lions took over.

The Steelers weren't doing a whole lot on the offensive end, but right before half Aaron Rodgers hit Kenneth Gainwell for a wild TD right before the halftime break. It was tied 10-10 heading into the second half and that's when PIT started to take control.

While it wasn't seen by officials, DK Metcalf was spotted punching a fan during the 2nd quarter of the game. He was not punished during the game, but he will be disciplined by the NFL in the week.

The Lions went up 10-3 right after the Two MInute Warning and it looked like they were about to take control before the halftime break.

The Pittsburgh Steelers went into to one of the toughest places to play on the road and came out with a huge win to keep them at the top of the AFC North. It went down to the wire and down to the very last inch but they held off the Lions in Detroit.

The Steelers defense got started on the right foot, holding Jared Goff and the Lions to a three and out before kicking a field goal and then stopping the 4th down conversion inside the PIT 10.

We have seen a lot of strange things happen this week. This might have been the strangest. St. Brown caught the ball, got stopped at the 1, pitched it to Goff who took it into the end zone for a TD. A flag flew for pass interference on St. Brown and the TD got wiped off the board and the game was ruled over after a long discussion between the refs.

After tonight’s game against the Lions they have a quick turn around on a short week when they play the Vikings in Minnesota on Christmas Day. Then they will head to Chicago for a Week 18 matchup which could be a huge match up that might decide which of those teams goes to the playoffs.

What's next: Steelers

Pittsburgh hit the road for tonight’s game and then pack their bags again next week when they take on the Browns from Cleveland for a road division match up. They will be hoping to have won both of those games before hosting the Baltimore Ravens in what could very well be an all or nothing game in the final week of the season. They know there is no room for a loss tonight, next week or against the Ravens in Week 18.

Watt still out for the Steelers

The Steelers have been without the heart and soul of their defense for the last couple of weeks. TJ Watt was getting a dry needle treatment at the Steelers practice facility and his lung collapsed after the treatment went wrong and sent him to the hospital where he had to get an operation that stabilized the lung but the timetable for his return is still up in the air. He missed the Dolphins game last week and he will miss today's game against one of the top offenses in the game. They need him back for the biggest part of the season but they know they can’t rush him back and put their top paid player at risk of further injury.

Star watch: Steelers

Aaron Rodgers was on the brink of retirement after last season with the Jets, and he and the Steelers played a game of cat and mouse all off season. The two finally came to an agreement and Rodgers joined Pittsburgh for what is most likely the final year of his career. The four time MVP's numbers are far from what he is used to posting but at 42 years old, he’s doing what he needs to do to keep the Steelers up in the AFC North standings. He’s had big games at times this season, like when he threw for 4 TDs in the Steelers loss to the Bengals or a couple weeks ago against the Ravens when he threw for 284 yards, but his season stats are pretty ordinary. He’s got 2,594 yards, 22 TDs and 7 INTs, but he is completing almost 70% of his passes. It is one of the biggest games of the season and these are the moments that the Steelers brought the four time MVP in for.

Star watch: Lions

Jared Goff has had back to back 300 yard games, and is in the top four of every important statistical category. He's got 3,672 yards (4th), 29 TDs (2nd) and is completing 69.3% of is passes (4th). It may not be the MVP candidate season like he put together last year, but his consistency can’t be questioned. The Lions know that it’s do or die here tonight, and if they are going to have any success at all it’s their QB that is going to have to lead the way in front of the home fans. The Lions haven’t lost back to back games since a couple of years ago, and they can’t afford to do so tonight. Expect a big game from Goff in a must win match up against the always stingy Steelers defense.

NFC Standings

In the NFC, the Lions have dropped out of the playoff picture coming into Week 16. They haven’t done themselves any favors exchanging wins and losses for their last 10 games. The Seahawks lead the conference at 12-3 after their win against LA on Thursday night. The Rams have one of the Wild Card spots at the moment, as do the San Francisco 49ers who are 10-4, and right behind them are the Green Bay Packers who lost to the Bears last night and lost their chance to take a commanding lead in the NFC North. The Lions were hoping for a Packers win so they could control their own destiny in the Wild Card chase, but now the Lions need to go 3-0 for the next three games and need to see the Bears lose a couple of games.

AFC Standings

Taking a look at the AFC Standings, we see the Steelers at the top of the AFC North thanks to their win over the Ravens a couple of weeks. Both Baltimore and Pittsburgh know that it’s going to come down to winning the division as the Wild Card spots are looking pretty secure at the moment. The Pats lead the Bills in the AFC East, but Buffalo has 10 wins, same with the Chargers who trail the Broncos by a couple games. Then the Texans trail the Jags in the AFC South, but their nine wins give them an edge over the Ravens who trail the Texans by two games. It’s going to come down to who wins the division, and the Ravens will be hoping the Lions can knock off the Steelers before their Sunday night later today.

Lions last game

Detroit knew they had a big chance to take a big step into the playoff picture last week in LA but they woulda have to knock off one of the best teams in the NFC in the Rams. It was a shootout from Sofi as the Lions came out swinging. They fumbled on their first possession, but would score three TDs and a field goal on their next four drives to take a 24-14 lead right before he half. LA hit field goals on both sides of the halftime break and the defense would lock in forcing DET to three straight three and outs. Matt Stafford would throw a TD pass to Parkinson to give the Rams the lead and then Blake Corum took in a TD run from 11 yards to strech the LA lead to 10. Stafford would find Parkinson in he end zone for a second time to put the nail in the coffin of the Lions.

Steelers last game

The Steelers have taken the lead over the Baltimore Ravens in the NFC North with back to back wins over the last two weeks. First they beat Baltimore and then breezed past a Miami Dolphins team that was on a four game win streak heading into Acrisure Stadium. It was a frigid nigh in Pittsburgh and an ugly first half as the Steelers went into the break up 7-3 thanks to a Connor Heyward tush push TD. Aaron Rodgers threw a couple of 3rd quarter TD passes to Marques Valdez-Scantling and DK Metcalf and former Dolphin Jonnu Smith took a rushing TD into the end zone to cap the game for the Steelers who remained at the top of the AFC North.

We are live from Ford Field

Hello everyone and welcome to Detroit where the Lions are back home after losing to the Rams in LA last week. Now, after the Bears thrilling win from the Windy City, they Lions chances to make the playoffs are even slimmer, but there is still hope. They need to beat the Steelers to have any chance, but the Steelers are holding on to their AFC North lead by a thread with the Baltimore Ravens nipping at their heels. We still have a few weeks until the playoffs start, but it's a playoff atmosphere here from the Motor City.
