Portugal 2 vs 0 USA live online: stats, score, goals and highlights Trincao scores to put POR ahead| International Friendly
The United States failed to rebound after the loss to Belgium, losing 2-0 to a Portugal side that looked a class above Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Show key events only
It was a sloppy touch it the middle of the park and you can't be careless against world class players like Vitinha and Bruno Fernandes. Vitinha played the ball into the area, Fernandes back heeled it and Trincao was there to put the first goal on the board in the 36th minute.
If the 5-2 loss to Belgium started a firestorm around the USMNT on Saturday night, then Tuesday's 2-0 loss against Portugal only added fuel to that fire just two months before the World Cup begins.
The Belgium match was supposed to serve as a wake up call for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, but it was another sleepy performance from the United States who looked short of ideas against a Portugal side that was effective and efficient with their chances. Intensity was the problem in the Belgium match. Creativity was the problem in the match against Portugal who went the 180 minutes break without conceding a goal.
Pochettino said his team looked better than Belgium at times in the first half of the first match, and that may have been the case for the first quarter of an hour against Portugal. Some early pressure on the Portugal back line created some opportunities to pounce for Christian Pulisic and Weston McKinnie, but the US came up empty and were unable to capitalize on a shaky start from Roberto Martinez’s men.
The closest of the chances for the US came from McKinnie off of a corner kick. The Juve midfielder was sitting on the back post all alone but couldn’t nod the header on frame. Shortly after, he laid a ball off at the top of the area on one of the only bits of combination play in the attacking third, but Pulisic was unable to beat the Portuguese keeper.
The cooling break came and everything seemed to change for the US. Portugal took a bit more control of possession and forced the US to retreat. Pochettino’s men struggled to build anything up from the back or in the midfield, searching for long balls over the top that were stifled by the sturdy back four of Portugal.
After creating a couple of take aways in the attacking third, it was the US who was careless with possession and a loose ball fell to Vitinha who quickly looked up to find Bruno Fernandes and he played a back heel into the path of Trincao who tucked it home for the first goal of the game in the 37th minute.
The US went into the half trailing and unable to make anything of the little possession that they were afforded. Pulisic, McKinnie and Robinson were subbed at the half and that took away any chance of creating in the attacking third.
Portugal added to their lead off a corner kick in which Bruno Fernandes played at ball to the top of the box for substitute Joao Felix. Felix, who had some interesting comments about the US fans and their commitment to the sport, took it out of the air, and powered it inside the post and past Matt Freese to double the advantage and essentially put the game to rest in the 59th minute.
Both Poch and Martinez used the final few minutes to dip into the bench to ensure no one was overexerting themselves and risking injury. Portugal ended the final break before the World Cup with a win and a draw, conceding no goals and scoring two against the US, while the USMNT head into these next few months in turmoil after a disappointing last week and a half.
IT'S ALL OVER!!!
The United States give another dull performance that is only going to add fuel to the fire just months before the World Cup.
Conceicao with a brilliant run in behind and put a shot on goal that needed saving from freeze. Excellent through ball to play in the midfielder and a fantastic save.
Four minutes of added time to come from Atlanta.
Trusy just went down chasing a ball at the end line and it looks like it is just going to be a cramp. You don't want anyone getting injured but less in the final few minutes of the last friendly before the World Cup squads are announced.
More pressure by POR and the US may have been fortunate to hear a whistle on Roldan.
POR are just passing the clock out at the moment as the US chase without much joy.
Mendes with a one touch ball into the area and that looked more like a shot than a cross but Freese was on top of it.
Balogun and Reyna with a one-two at the top of the area, and a cross into the center of the box is cleared away again with ease.
Aaaronson had a chance to play a pass off the counter but decided to shoot from the top of the area and had his shot deflected and then soared it over the crossbar as that threat is extinguished without much force from the POR defense.
Balgon goes down after a ball into the area from Reyna who was just subbed on. He is back up on his feet without any medical attention.
Agyemang with a gorgeous bit of skill in the corner to get around the defender and his ball into to the top of the six yard box was cleared away with Balogun in the area.
Fernandes with a dink over the top looking for Felix but that was cleared off the back line by the US.
Felix found the loose ball at the top of the area off the corner but sent the low show wide of the target as he looked across goal again.
Give away from Arsten in his own end and that goes out for a corner kick. The second goal came from a corner earlier in the half.
Back in play and an excellent shield from Nunes to guide a ball out for a goal kick.
We are at the second cooling break of the game, and this is when the US lost their grip on the match in the second half. Let's see if they can turn things around after this break.
What a play off the throw in. Horta couldn´t put it on frame but Concenciao snuck in behind the defense and to the end line, crossed it off the volley and it found Horta but he had a lot of work to do off the volley and couldn´t keep the effort down.
Freeman lost his footing and POR pounced but Fernandes wasn't able to turn that into a scoring chance as his shot was deflected wide of target.
Nothing comes of the corner but POR keep possession and with a two goal advantage they can knock the ball around a bit.
Neves with a strike off the half volley from 30 yards out and it needed a save from Freese who pused it out for a corner.
It was Fernandes that found Joao Felix at the top of the area and the former prodigy slotted it home with a gorgeous finish from outside the area.
GOOOOOOAALLLLLL!!!!
A training ground piece from POR finds Felix at the top of the area and he takes it out of the air and thumps it across the face of goal and tucks it inside the post to double the advantage!!!!
Freeman and Mendes going stride for stride and a sliding challenge provokes a corner for POR.
Mendes with a cross into the area that was cleared away by Freeman.
Ramos stepped over a loose ball at the top of the area after a great ball through from Nunes but the shot was wide right of the target.
Counter by the US as Weah looked for a diagonal ball for Agyemang but that was cut out and easily dealt with by POR. It looks like Poch's team is more intent on taking advantage of mistakes than building up play from the back for the first hour of this match.
Some more pressure from the US forces a give away in a dangerous area but Morris's shot from the top of the area rolled to Sa with ease.
Arfsen has been the most involved of the subs, trying a cross that got deflected not one but three times before being cleared out of danger.
Joao Felix one of the seven subs introduced by Martinez after the break.
Let's see how the US comes out after swapping three of their play makers up front for a couple of subs that Poch made at the break.
Pulisic, McKinnie and Robinson are all staying out of the sidelines. Agyemang, Arftsen and Tessmann come in for the 2nd 45.
Seven players have swapped out for POR as Martinez has seen enough from some of his top guys.
Portugal spent much of the first 20 minutes on the back foot. Fernandes had an early chance after a give away in the middle of the park, but Freese was up to the task and pushed it wide. After the cooling break POR took control of possession and the game, and in the 37th minute it was Trincao finishing off a lovely bit of build up from Vitinha and Fernandes.
It was another first half in which the US came out and may have looked the better side for the first 20 minutes. They pressured the back line of Portugal and forced a few mistakes that could have been dangerous. The best chance for the US came for McKinnie off a corner kick, but he nodded it wide of the back post. Robinson laced a shot across the face of goal that went wide but Sa hasn't been tested a whole through the first 45 minutes. Pulisic also had a chance but he sent it wide of the target, and the US go into the 2nd half chasing Portugal.
WE ARE HEADING TO THE HALFTIME BREAK FROM ATLANTA!
Portugal take a one goal lead into the dressing room thanks to a brilliant bit of play from Vitinha and Fernandes that was finished off by Trincao.
Pulisic trying to make something happen on the left edge the area but took a touch too many and ended up taking down the defender and being shown a yellow card.
Ramos running into the box but took a heavy touch and that ball rolls out for a goal kick.
Four minutes of stoppage time before the break.
Pulisic wins it in at the halfway line and carried it all the way to the area where he laid it off to McKinnie who lost his feet at the moment to make some magic happen.
Short corner that came to Pulisic but his cross in was cleared away only as far as Robinson who tried the half volley and sent it soaring.
Weah sends a ball in that was cleared wide and out for a corner.
Robinson pounces on a loose pass through the middle of the defensive third for POR and he laces one across the face of goal and just wide of the target!
The US look a little lost when they are on the ball even before the goal came.
It was a terrible give away in the midfield which Vitinha jumped on and sent Fernandes into the area, and the Man U wizard picked out Trincao on the back heel. Trincao lifted his head and tucked it side netting in one touch from the right side of the area.
GOOOOOOAAAALLLLLLLLLL!!!!!
Portugal take the lead after a lovely back heel from Fernandes to Trincao!!!!
PORTUGAL LEAD 1-0 AFTER 36 MINUTES!!!
Pulisic squares up and puts a shot just wide of target from the top of the areaafter a great lay off from Tillman.
McKinnie went in for the cross on the right side and Cancelo got a chunk of him which will result in a yellow card and a free kick right outside the area near the touchline.
Freeman having a wonder up the pitch. He was stopped in his tracks by Inacio but a nice sign of attacking play from the US who have been a bit stale for the last few minutes.
Dalot into the area with a cross but Richards was up to the challenge with the clearance.
Not a whole lot being built up from the back for USA, and that is the reason Portugal have been able to take control of possession over the last 10 minutes.
Richards sends the corner kick from Fernandes out of danger and a careless ball back into the area will result in a goal kick for the US.
Portugal coming out of the break a little more settled, knocking the ball around and Freeman had to nod the ball out for a corner kick after a ball into the box from Neto.
We are back in play after a quick cooling break in an air conditioned stadium that some still may not understand.
We are at the hydration break, and there aren't as many boos as we heard on Saturday as both teams throw jabs as they feel each other out.
Tillmamn to Weah down the right side and his cross went over everyone but the US gathered dropped it back to Berhalter at the top of the area and his shot from long range was saved by Sa and it needed stopping.
Not much being built up through the midfield for either team. The US are looking for those long balls over the top while Portugal have spent much of the time chasing.
Ball in behind the defense for McKinnie who ran it down and laid it off to Weah whose shot went sailing. Flag went up but good intent from the US who look the more eager at the moment.
Another mistake from Portugal in the back fell to Weah, but he couldn't square up to put a shot on target. Good pressure from the front three or four from the US, making life difficult for Portugal.
I must say I really like the Portugal kits they are rocking for this match. Hope to see them a little more come June and maybe July.
Not a bad ball into the area from Neto but it went over the head of Freese and everyone else in the box. Portugal is starting to enjoy some possession after a shaky first few minutes.
Our man in the stands, Will Gittens is saying that it seems about 50/50 in the Mercedes Benz Stadium in favor of Portugal and the US. It looks a little more full than it did on Saturday with a heavy base of Portuguese fans in attendance.
That was the first time the US made a mistake in the back and Portugal almost materialized it into a goal on their first attempt of the night.
Vitnha plays in Fernades who had a tight angle running into the box but Freese got a hand to the shot across the face of goal and steered it wide for a corner.
Lovely corner from the left side right onto the head of a wide open McKinnie but he put it just wide of the back post. US has started this night off with much more intensity than they ended the match against Belgium.
Pulisic with the first real scoring chance of the match after another give away in the defensive third. Tillman laid it off for Pulisic who had his shot stopped in front of goal.
Robinson with another ball in from the left side but Berhalter was ruled offside but Portugal have started this match off on the back foot.
Robinson's cross into the box from the left side is cleared away and out of danger.
Portugal's first push up the park results in nothing as the US clear their lines without the visitors getting into the area.
The first shot on goal comes from Tillman after some heavy pressure early on that gives Portugal some initial trouble.
WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM ATLANTA!!!! A big one for both teams, The US have 90 minutes to either calm the storm or rock the waters either more.
It's National Anthem time here from Mercedes Benz Stadium, and as we wait for kickoff enjoy some snaps from our main man in Atlanta, Will Gittens, who is on site covering the match. Hope you brought your Ronaldo shirt along with about 90% of the fans in attendance Will.

Here is Roberto Martinez's XI before choosing his final squad for this summer's World Cup.
This is Mauricio Pochettino's final starting XI before he has to name a final squad for the World Cup.
Where to next for Poch? He's not worried about that
What's next for Poch? That’s one of the burning questions coming into this World Cup. He’s not concerned with what may or may not happens as his focus is solely on focusing on the road ahead, but there are reports linking him to both Real Madrid and Tottenham. They may be a bit far fetched for both sides, and Pochettino isn’t taking the bait. He says he is fully focused on the next few months with the USMNT.
USMNT World Cup schedule
USA is off to a rocky start just a couple months out from starting the World Cup on their own soil. They got a little clearer of a picture of who they will be facing after Turkey's win in the playoff tonight. They will have a couple of warm up matches against Senegal and Germany before kicking off their World Cup campaign.
USA vs. Paraguay June 12
USA vs. Australia June 19
Turkey vs. USA June 25
Pulisic says goals will come
There were a couple of times against Belgium where the US could have taken the lead or leveled up but Captain America, Christian Pulisic “I feel good in a lot of ways. I know a ball will hit off my knees and go in. Things will change. Better now than in the summer. Things are going to change.” That will be the hope for the US side, but like he said, better wait until the real competition starts than score a load of goals right now.
Portugal World Cup schedule:
This is Portugal's final tune up before early June. They will have one final tune up match against Chile on the 6th of June, but then it’s full steam ahead with the World Cup. Here is their schedule in the Group K.
Portugal vs. New Caledonia/Jamaica/RD Congo June 17th
Portugal vs. Uzbekistan June 23
Colombia vs. Portugal June 27
Water break broke up play?
Boos rang out at the Mercedes Benz Stadium when the match was stopped for the first time for a water break for both sides. It was spring in Georgia, and there was a roof tapping an air conditioned stadium. There wasn't much need for a break, but I suppose officials were getting teams ready for what was to come during a summer that is surely to be quite hot in Mexico and the US especially. Poch wasn´t a big fan of the breaks, but Belgium coach Rudi Garcia seemed to be on board.
What a disaster would look like for US
Former US national team keeper Kasey Keller has spelled out what disaster would look like for the US team on their home soil. The former No. 1 says the US side needs to at least get out of the group stages. Especially with the new format where three teams advanced from the group stages, it would be a disaster if they were to be left out of the knockout phase of the tournament.
Lack of fanfare in Atlanta?
It was a bit of a bleak scene from the Mercedes Benz Stadium on Saturday night. In one of the biggest matches on home soil in a long time, it was awfully evident that there were unoccupied seats around the stadium. One can only hope that will change with fans from all over the world coming to watch the World Cup, but the support for this team is not quite up to standard with a country that is one of the hosts of the World Cup.
USA expectations, reality or wishful thinking?
Before the Belgium match, the US were setting their sights sky high for the World Cup. When Pochettino was asked about the objective is, he answered quite clearly. “To win! Because the USA is a country where, regardless of the athlete, regardless of the sport, at the start of a competition, the objective is to win. Soccer is no exception to the rule.” Now you would expect any coach of any team to say that, but the US would consider a semifinal appearance a positive result with the competition being held on home soil. They would like to follow in the footsteps up Morocco or South Korea. Korea did so when they co hosted the tournament with Japan in 2002, and Morocco stunned everyone when they went to the semis in 2022 in Qatar.
US all time against Portugal
Portugal is known as a powerhouse in the sport, but don't sell the US short. They have played the Portuguese national team seven times, and the series history can’t get much more even. The US has won two, lost two and drawn three. The last time these two teams played came in 2017 when Weston McKinnnie scored against the then defending European champions in a 1-1 draw. There have been four friendlies, two World Cup matches and one in the US Cup back in 1992. The US won one of those World Cup matches back in 2002 in Korea, and the other World Cup match came back in 2014 when they played to a 2-2 draw.
USA injury report
The big name on the injury report coming into tonight's game is Johnny Cardoso. He played 45 minutes against Belgium, but was pulled after halftime as Pochettino wanted to protect him from a knock on his leg getting any worse. Cardoso returned to Madrid, and that leaves Miles Robinson and Chris Richards as the other two injured players that will miss tonight’s important tune up match.
Why is Ronaldo not playing?
There will be one massive void on the pitch tonight with the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo. The former Real Madrid man is currently dealing with a hamstring injury that has been keeping him out of action for the last two matches with his club Al Nasser. He was injured at the start of the month, and is still recovering as he sets his sights toward the World Cup in June. Ronaldo played his first World Cup in 2006 and now is set to play in his sixth, looking for the only trophy that eludes the Portuguese astro.
Star watch: USA
For Mauricio Pochettino's side, it’s a few of the more well known names on the other side of the pond that will be relied upon to do the heavy lifting. Guys like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKinnie and Johnny Cardoso are the headliners. Patrick Agyemang, and Timothy Weah are the two danger men up top. Cardoso is out tonight, but other than him those are the stars of the show. They will need to show a bit more than they did last game, but it’s going to be up to everyone to put on a show tonight after a disappointing performance last time out against Belgium.
Star watch: Portugal
The biggest star on the Portugal side will not be featured but that doesn't mean that this side is without world class players at each position. Rui Silva is in goal with defenders like Joao Cancelo and Nuno Mendes ahead. Magic makers in the middle of the park led by Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha control the midfield and up top you have dangerous goal scorers that will be looking to put their names on the scoresheet after getting blanked against Mexico. Goncalo Ramos, Pedro Neto, and Francisco Conceicao will be all hungry to put at least one on the board after watching Belgium put five past the UNMNT.
Poch after loss
Whiile the result was far from comforting, Mauricio Pochettino seemed unphased by the scoreline and more concerned with the way his team turned on and off at moments throughout the match. Even admitting that he thought that his team showed moments in which they were as good if not better than the Belgium. "It's not a thing to be concerned about the World Cup. It’s more about to analyze the game. I think it was a game, of course 5-2 is difficult to accept — it’s painful — but at the same time we can take so many positive things. The first half was really good. We played better than Belgium. We created chances to finish the 45 minutes in a positive way but we concede in the last action and there was an impact."
Poch went on to talk about the intensity of his side, which was not up to standards for the entire 90 minutes. “The plan was to keep that intensity. In the moment that we matched Belgium’s mentality we were even and in some moments better but it’s true that in some moments we dropped our intensity and how you can confirm that were in too many actions we were in place with superiority but we did not receive it, like in the way conceded the first goal.”
Last game: USA
Disaster struck last game against Belgium and it came like a tsunami after the halftime break. It was even for the first 45 minutes and the US even took a lead right after the half hour mark, but things fell apart in a hurry. Weston McKinnie put the stars and stripes ahead in the 38th minute but that only seemed to poke the bear, and Belgium responded with a goal from Zeno Debast in the 44th minute. The Belgians came out of the dressing room with all the win in their sails, and added two more to their lead before the 60th minute thanks to goals from Amadou Onana and Charles De Ketelaere who scored from the spot. Lukebakio scored two more just for good measure as Pochettino's side was dealt a reality check in the first of two matches during this international break.
Last game: Portugal
It was an underwhelming performance from both Mexico and Portugal who played to a 0-0 draw on Saturday night from the Estadio Banorte in Ciudad de Mexico. The Mexicans might have came out the happier of the two sides, but you would have expected a bit more fire power from a Portugal side that has top players from clubs around the world. It was a disappointing result for coach Martinez and his guys, but they will have a chance to put on a show with the eyes of both USA and Portugal intently watching this match.
We are live from Atlanta
Hello everyone and welcome to Mercedes Benz Stadium from Atlanta, Georgia. It was a less than impressive show for the United States in their last time out from this very same stadium, and concern is starting to grow as the World Cup approaches. Tonight's match against Portugal will either calm the storm or rock the boat even more with just over two months to go. This is an opportunity for US to show they are ready to take on teams at the top of the FIFA rankings, but if they squander this opportunity it will be a very nervy next few weeks for Mauricio Pochettino, his players and fans all over the country
Portugal vs. USA
The final look for Mauricio Pochetinno before having to select his World Cup squad before the tournament kicks off in June. The Americans are licking their wounds after a thorough beat down against Belgium on Saturday, and that served as a warning of what to expect when they take on some of the top teams in the world. Tonight is another test against Roberto Martinez's Portugal. All eyes are on the red, white and blue as they get geared up for the World Cup hosted on home soil.
