START OF MATCH

Spurs: Lloris, Walker, Dier, Alderweireld, Davies, Waynama, Dembele, Eriksen, Dele Alli, Son, Kane

Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Clyne, Matip, Lovren, Milner, Lallana, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Mane, Firmino, Coutinho

Liverpool v Spurs: possible line-ups

Player to watch: Dele Alli. Although Harry Kane has taken most of the plaudits in the last season and a half at White Hart Lane, it's his compatriot who is coming more and more to the fore. The young English midfielder has shown he can take a game by the scruff of the neck and is no flat-track bully like some other so-called stars of the league. If he is on form then Spurs have a good shout at the three points.

Big misses for the visitors from London are at the back with the impressive Danny Rose and Jan Vertonghen missing and Eric Dier and Ben Davies likely to step in. And they'll have their work cut out for them if Liverpool's frontline click like their 2016 version. Eriksen and Alli will be expected to provide much of the ammunition for Kane with the hard-working Heung-Min Son supporting.

Although getting lots of praise, and rightly so, Mauricio Pochetino's side sit just four points ahead of their opponents and know that on the road they have been less efficient in gaining points than at home. In fact, Spurs' away form is the worst of all top six teams with only four wins out of 12 matches. And they are arriving to Anfield, a stadium that had until recently been a fortress for the Merseyside outfit. The important words there are "until recently" with the Reds looking very vulnerable, something Pochetino will be aiming to target in the early minutes.

Tottenham Hotspur

Player to watch: Simon Mignolet. With so many creative, attacking players that could influence the home side's chances of success, the main individual focus is likely to be on the backline, and in particular the final element of defence. The big Belgian has proved he can pull off a string of important saves this campaign but there is always a feeling that another key mistake is just waiting to happen. Not great for building confidence in those around him.

Philippe Coutinho has returned from injury. Sadio Mane is back from African Nations duty. Joel Matip has been given the Fifa thumbs up. With few players missing, there can be little to excuse this team any more and Klopp and fans alike will be hoping that their side continue their strong run of results against fellow top-six sides - they have the best record of the six. Expect the front four to be deployed as they have been most of the season in a fluid and fast quartet with supporting roles from Wijnaldum and Henderson. Width will be provided by Milner and Clyne, while Lovren (doubt) and Matip will be expected to keep Harry Kane at bay. Where Liverpool have struggled in certain games is breaking down teams that sit back and fill up all the spaces - even José Mourinho and Antonio Conte came to Anfield with defence-first attitudes - but Spurs should come with a we-can-out-play-you swagger, which should make for good viewing.

After an impressive start the season, Jürgen Klopp's first full campaign in charge at Anfield is at risk of being a disaster, relatively. A Champions League position was certainly an objective last August but the attacking prowess on show - with the dynamism of Coutinho, Lallana, Firmino and newly acquired Mane - started to make some believe that this could be a title challenge in the making, even with doubts remaining on their defensive lapses. A win against Manchester City on the last day of 2016 had the Reds on the tailcoats of leaders Chelsea, with a sizeable gap to fifth-place disappointment. But before heart-shaped cards are even posted in 2017, the team sit outside the top four and have had a horrendous run of results, albeit managing a deserved draw against Chelsea.

Liverpool

The teams currently sitting in second and fifth place in the Premier League meet in what promises, on paper at least, to be an entertaining 90 minutes. Both managers have a positive attitude as to how the beautiful game should be played, with a high tempo to their teams' passing and pressing games defining elements. One big difference between the two sides this season has been their defensive performances, with Liverpool's the reason that Spurs, not they, are the closest challengers to Chelsea for the title race.
