Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Alavés v Atlético Madrid, LaLiga matchday 20, from the Mendizorrotza stadium in Vitoria (known as Gasteiz in Basque)

Preview  of Alavés vs. Atlético Madrid

Alavés will look to use their excellent home form to grab points against an Atletico Madrid side who are struggling to find the kind of consistency that they have become known for under Diego Simeone. On Saturday at 16:15 CET they play at the Mendizorrotza as Atletico look to move back into the Champions League places with Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao not playing until later in the weekend.

Cholo Simeone admitted after his side's draw with Athletic Bilbao last weekend that Atletico Madrid are now in a battle for fourth place and fighting for Champions League football. In the first game of the season, Atletico welcomed an Alavés side fresh out of the Segunda Divison and were shocked to encounter a resolute and relentless side managed by Mauricio Pellegrino. When Kevin Gameiro broke the deadlock late in the game, it looked like Atletico had managed to squeek three points out of the game but Manú Garcia struck in the fifth minute of injury time, Atletico were flattened.

Alavés team news

Alavés are a touch nut to crack at home and have only lost twice in the opening half of the season at the Mendizorrotza (to Real Madrid and Espanyol). They are also boosted by the news that Theor Hernandez, their marauding left-back on loan from Atletico, is allowed to play as the "clause of fear" that prevented him from playing at the Vicente Calderon does not extend as far as the very north of the country, where Alavés call home. They are also buoyed by the news that they avoided two of Spain's heavier hitters in the Copa del Rey semi-final and stand an excellent chance of making the final, as they play Celta over two leg's in the last four.

Atlético Madrid team news

Atletico Madrid have a horrible record in Vitoria and only won once in six attempts, which inclues three 2-0 losses and two draws. The only good news is that Atletico's sole victory up north is the most recent game against their opponents on Saturday (2005-06). Jan Oblak and Augusto Fernandez remain Atletico's long-term injury absentees while Tiago has returned but, most likely, won't make the trip to Alavés. Antoine Griezmann will return t the starting line-up, refreshed and ready, having been rested for Atletico's second leg against Eibar in the Copa del Rey mid-week.

Alavés - Atlético Madrid: possible line-ups
