Real Madrid vs Mallorca: Spanish Super Cup semifinal live updates
Real Madrid and Mallorca about to come out
"Freed From Desire" rings out around King Abdullah Sports City as Real Madrid and Mallorca wait in the tunnel, waiting to make their entrances. Do stadium DJs know they are allowed to play other songs at soccer games? And it doesn't have to be "Seven Nation Army".
Mallorca team to play Real Madrid
Greif; Maffeo, Valjent, Raillo, Mojica; Rodríguez, Mascarell, Darder; Larin, Muriqi.
Coach Jagoba Arrasate will be hoping Pablo Maffeo can ruffle Vinicius Jr's feathers once again. Canadian striker Cyle Larin, once of Orlando City, leads the line.
Real Madrid team to play Mallorca
Courtois; Vázquez, Tchouaméni, Rüdiger, Mendy; Valverde, Camavinga; Rodrygo, Bellingham, Vinícius; Mbappé.
Mendy gets the nod over Camavinga at left-back, and Camavinga over Ceballos in midfield. The latter is the only change to the team that defeated Valencia way from home last Friday.
10 minutes to go until kickoff! Here's a reminder of how the teams will line up in Jeddah.
Real Madrid's super Super Cup record
Real Madrid have been one of the two most dominant teams in the Spanish Super Cup over the years. You'll never guess what the other one is...
Los Blancos have won the competition on 13 occasions, most recent last season, when they destroyed Barcelona 4-1 in the final, with Vinicius Jr scoring a hat-trick (Barça, however, get the last laugh, with 14 victories).
As I mentioned a little earlier on, Mallorca have lifted the trophy just once before, in 1998, when they defeated Barcelona 3-1 in a two-legged final. Will they get the chance to do so again on Sunday?
Mallorca: last five games
Jan 3: Pontevedra 3-0 Mallorca
Dec 21: Getafe 0-1 Mallorca
Dec 14: Mallorca 2-1 Girona
Dec 6: Celta Vigo 2-0 Mallorca
Dec 3: Mallorca 1-5 Barcelona
Mallorca's fine LaLiga season
Mallorca are going well in LaLiga, currently in sixth place in the standings after 19 games. And they are five points clear of seventh-placed Real Sociedad, who have a game in hand, admittedly. For context, the islanders' best ever finish is third; they are eight points behind third-placed Barcelona as it stands.
Their recent form hasn't been great, though. They've lostthree of their last five games, which includes a 3-0 Copa del Rey upset away to third-tier Pontevedra.
Real Madrid: last 5 games
Jan 6: Deportivo Minera 0-5 Real Madrid
Jan 3: Valencia 1-2 Real Madrid
Dec 22: Real Madrid 4-2 Sevilla
Dec 18: Real Madrid 3-0 Pachuca
Dec 14: Rayo Vallecano 3-3 Real Madrid
Real Madrid top of LaLiga after turning form back around
Real Madrid have roared back into form after a patchy spell, by their own high standards. Between late October and early December, Los Blancos lost four games out of seven, which included a 4-0 home thrashing by Barcelona, a 3-1 home defeat by AC Milan, and away losses to Liverpool and Athletic Club.
They’re turned things around well, however, winning their last four games in a row in all competitions, whichincluded the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final. That’s taken them two points ahead of Atlético Madrid at the top of LaLiga, although their city rivals have a game in hand.
Real Madrid arrive at King Abdullah Sport City!
Real Madrid have made their grand arrival at King Abdullah Sport City in Jeddah. Will they be back for the final on Sunday? They'll certainly hope so, and will probably expect to be too.
Barcelona lie in wait, could we have a second straight Spanish Super Cup final Clásico?
How Mallorca qualified for the Spanish Super Cup
Unlike Real Madrid, Mallorca didn't win anything last season. But they didn't have to to get into the Spanish Super Cup. As mentioned, the LaLiga and Copa del Rey runners-up also qualify, and they fell into the latter category.
Athletic Club only just pipped Mallorca to the Copa del Rey, winning in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw, although the result had no bearing on the 2025 Spanish Super Cup lineup, with both finalists qualifying thanks to Madrid and Barça finishing first and second in LaLiga last season.
How Real Madrid qualified for the Spanish Super Cup
Unless you completely switched off from soccer last season, which I'm betting you didn't, you'll be aware that Real Madrid did pretty well. They lifted the Champions League/European Cup for the 15th time and also won LaLiga, which is how they booked their ticket for the 2025 Spanish Super Cup.
Since 2020, the Spanish Super Cup has been played in Saudi Arabia and had four participants: the reigning LaLiga champions, the LaLiga runners-up, the Copa del Rey holders and the Copa del Rey runners-up.
Did you know two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash is a Mallorca fan? Yes, really. And not only that, he's one of the club's part owners.
"The club has experienced great growth since we arrived and obviously being in LaLiga and doing well is the most important thing. Off the field we’ve taken important steps too in terms of infrastructure and with the modernisation of the stadium, which are essential for the future," Nash told AS' David Alonso earlier this week.
Here's the full interview with Nash, who reckons he now watches a lot more soccer than basketball.
Inside the Mallorca dressing room
In the interest of impartiality, here's how the Mallorca dressing room is looking ahead of the game against Real Madrid. Always a good idea to take three pairs of boots with you, just in case two aren't enough.
Mallorca team to play Real Madrid
Here's how Mallorca will line up against Real Madrid:
Greif; Maffeo, Valjent, Raillo, Mojica; Rodríguez, Mascarell, Darder; Larin, Muriqi.
The main things to look out for: Pablo Maffeo will try to ruffle Vinicius Jr's feathers once again, while Canadian striker Cyle Larin, once of Orlando City, leads the line.
Benzema back with Real Madrid
The fact the tournament is being played in Saudi Arabia means it would've been rude of Real Madrid not to catch up with former striker Karim Benzema, now playing for Saudi Pro League team Al Ittihad. Just the 354 goals in 648 games, five Champions Leagues, four LaLiga titles and one Ballon d'Or for Benz with Los Blancos.
Why is the Spanish Super Cup being played in Saudi Arabia?
The Spanish Super Cup used to be a two-legged final played at the start of the season and involved two teams: the reigning LaLiga champions and the previous season’s Copa del Rey winners. In 2018, the Spanish Soccer Federation (RFEF) took the game abroad for a first ever one-off final.
They then realised they could make considerably more money by inviting four teams to take part in the middle of the season, increasing the odds that both Real Madrid and Barcelona, the main Spanish money-spinners, would be involved. And with Saudi Arabia seemingly happy to throw cash at anything sport-related these days, the RFEF couldn’t fail to line their pockets. Most fans back home in Spain are not impressed, and neither they should be.
Inside the Real Madrid dressing room
Here's the mandatory pregame dressing room video from Real Madrid. Supercopa de España patch included, of course. If you watch enough of it, you'll see Lucas Vázquez captains the team against Mallorca. David Alaba's jersey appears near the beginning and he has officially been named on the bench, although it appears unlikely he will be involved unless something drastic happens.
Vinicius allowed to face Mallorca despite Valencia sending off
In case you're wondering what on earth Vinicius Jr's name is doing on the Real Madrid team sheet after he was sent off for slapping the Valencia goalkeeper in his team's last game, then I'm betting you're not alone. There did look to be a chance that the Brazilian winger wouldn't be available for the Spanish Super Cup, although Madrid were confident he would (typical Madrid).
Here's a little more on why Vini has been cleared to play in the competition despite a red card last time out.
Real Madrid team news: no new injuries
There were no new injury issues for Carlo Ancelotti to contend with ahead of today's game. That means defensive duo Dani Carvajal and Eder Militão are the only confirmed absentees.
Don't expect to see Carvajal or Militão any time soon, although David Alaba is back in training having been out since December 2023 with an ACL injury. He's been named on the bench against Mallorca but is unlikely to get any game time.
Real Madrid lineup to play Mallorca
Even by their own usual standards, Real Madrid have gone incredibly early with their Spanish Super Cup semifinal lineup!
Courtois; Vázquez, Tchouaméni, Rüdiger, Mendy; Valverde, Camavinga; Rodrygo, Bellingham Vinícius; Mbappé.
Mendy gets the nod over Camavinga at left-back, and Camavinga over Ceballos in midfield. The latter is the only change to the team that defeated Valencia way from home last Friday.
Can Dani Olmo play in the Spanish Super Cup final?
Barcelona’s well-documented financial problems have caused them plenty of embarrassment for a number of reasons, not least signing players for big money that they’re not sure they can register to play. That’s been the case with attacker Dani Olmo, who they were able to register for the first half of the season due to the unregistration of the injured Andreas Christensen, but who wasn’t initially registered for the second half of 2024/25 (from January 1 onwards). However, Barça won an appeal heard on Wednesday, almost at the time of their win over Athletic, and cantemporarily register Olmo, and fellow forward Pau Victor, which means they are both eligible to play in Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup final.
In case you missed the first semifinal, which was played between Athletic Club and Barcelona yesterday (Tuesday), fear not! My esteemed colleague William Allen was all over that and you go for a deep dive on how the action went down with him here.
The short version is that goals from Gavi and Lamine Yamal gave Hansi Flick’s team a well-deserved victory over Athletic, who had two late goals disallowed but didn’t quite put up as much of a fight as many had expected them to. And there’s more good news for the Catalans too…
Who will Real Madrid or Mallorca play in the Spanish Super Cup final?
The winners of the Real Madrid vs Mallorca clash will take on Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final. That game will take place on Sunday, January 12 at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, which is hosting all three games in this year’s competition.
